After lots of research, fondling at the shop, and thinking i've decided on a CZ 550 FS for my next all purpose rifle.
Took my blacktail this year with a 1941 mosin nagant that i accurized and worked up a handload for and that itch is pretty much scratched so it's on to the next thing (it's hard being a gun nut).
Here's a pic in-case you're interested:
And here is the CZ:
It's a 20.5" barrel, mannlicher forearm, hogsback stock. 7lbs. Comes in 308, 270, .06, 9.3x62, and 6.5x55 swedish.
I'm kind of leaning towards .308 or 6.5x55 but i'm a little leary for eastern oregon elk. I hunt western blacktails, western roosevelt, eastern muleys, and eastern rocky mtn elk. The 6.5x55 has an amazing ballistic coeficcient and sectional density both, and catches up to the .308 at about 200 yards so it almost seems like a wash.
More bullet weight options for .308 (156 is a heavy round for the swede) but the great bc and sectional density of the swede seems to almost make me more comfortable for eastern oregon elk at 300 yards (probably my max range under normal conditions).
I'll hand-load for whatever i get. I keep hearing great reports on the 9.3 as well, it would certainly we an awesome western elk cartridge, but maybe run out of gas taking a longer shot at a deer out east and maybe too much wasted meat on a deer out west, heh...
This is a tough one, i'm not very close to making a decision. Anyone want to chime in?
