Would you rather have police go to every mental call or a team trained to deal with it. Portland already has this. It's called Portland Street Response. If police were called to every incidence of a person screaming on the street they'd never have time for anything else. It frees up the already downsized police force to answer more important 911 calls. If a team feels it is a dangerous situation they can still call police.

The whole point of police is to deal with dicey situations where their qualified immunity allows them to deal with situations that regular citizens would otherwise possibly/probably get in trouble or surd for handling. The "mental health team" seems like another expense at the cost of taxpayers that is an unnecessary added step between what will still be police being at scenes to deal with mentally unstable people because there is always an inherent safety risk in dealing with mentally unstable people.

See now you are trying to use logic on people who only act on emotion. A LOT of people who vote see video and hear stories of drugged up kooks that get hurt when Cops show up. So people who have never had to deal with these nuts scream, yell, stamp their feet, and got this. Now when the results are exactly what any thinking person knows it will be those same people will NEVER admit it was a mistake. We just need a lot more pain.

Unfortunately the level of cognitive dissonance is so strong with that particular ideology that even the facts crapping right on their face wouldn't be enough to change their mind. After the first Alternative Crisis Responder gets murdered (and you know it is coming), then this "pilot" program will get retooled significantly, probably subsumed under police response or, hopefully, ceased. Moronic ideas like this, borne of utopian ideological purist stupidity, always look sterling to the myopic believers until they crash into reality, after which the few real grown ups remaining have to clean up the mess. Just so sad to see this same old song and dance play out time and time again. The program names change, but the stupidity continues under idealogues in Seattle and Portland.
