"This is what we train for, this is what we prepare for, and this is what we pray that we never have to do. On this day, we realized our worst nightmare," Cameron said.
"The notion of 'it can't happen here' is no longer a notion."
I would love to see SROs and volunteer teachers trained and armed. Training would consist of one-on-ones or team-on-team in a campus situation with paintball guns. That's as real as you can get without real firearms and live ammo.

"Beltrame's entire career seemed to lead inexorably to the moment when he responded to the attack Friday in Trebes, a 15-minute drive from the gendarme unit he had led since last August.

He joined France's elite police special forces in 2003 and served in Iraq in 2005. A former member of the presidential guard, he earned one of France's highest honors, the Order of Merit, in 2012.

In December, Beltrame organized a counterterrorism training session for just such a hostage situation — down to the location in a supermarket. At the time, he armed his officers with paintball guns, according to the Depeche du Midi newspaper.

"We want to be as close to real conditions as possible," he said then."

I'm wondering exactly how that works. If a bullet hit a gun in the kid's hand how did he hang on to it, and how was it operative afterwards?

(shhhh) saying the young man killed himself eliminates the song and dance of possible wrongful death and/or civil suits and so forth for the sheriff, country, and community (shhhh)

"Surrounded" by cops hiding behind their cars, is not quite the same as face to face, facing the gun. There's a difference. Can you tell?

Let's not forget the Chicago PD's version of the young male they shot cuz "they felt threatened as the young man was about to attack them."
PD jumped up and down trying not to release the video, they attempted to erase it, and tried, w/o success to obfuscate the truth: the young adult was running away and the PD officers shot him in the back! two+ years for that to come out.

3 Chicago Police Officers Accused Of Cover-Up In Killing Of Laquan McDonald

Oh darn, all of these 'mass' shootings are court sealed, forever! Wonder why?

Oh dear, seems the RSO's actions didn't alledgedly end the adolescent shooter's life after all!

Now, if believed, the sheriff is now stating the RSO missed the shooter, hitting his firearm and the shooter took his own life!

If, believed!

The Maryland school shooter was killed by his own bullet, not the school resource officer's, police say

This kid stopped what he was doing. End of story. The cop engaged the shooter. Unlike Sandy Hook or any other mass school shooting. Well on the positive side, media can follow a story abd get details. Who knew?

justcuz,

Yes, there are some dirty cops.

And, yes, there are some dirty teachers.

Nothing is 100%. But, here it is.....

"Which way does the shooter go?"

alas, the young man had already stopped as he accomplished exactly what he wanted, get even with his ex-girlfriend by shooting her in the head! it wasn't a random shot and he had plenty of opportunity to shoot other students who were hiding under tables and running screaming away!

sorry ma96782, et al., the young man was on a very specific mission, to exact revenge for some slight, real or perceived, from his ex-girlfriend and the location would not have mattered one iota as he would have still found his victim!

he knew the RSO was armed and it didn't stop the young man now did it?

BTW, you forgot a major 'dirty' and that is our state & national legislators!

There is a large difference between carrying a gun, and being ready, willing, and able to use it.

Split second decisions that have lifelong, life & death consequences are another factor that must be considered before carrying a firearm.

If these items are considered, then it's not the best idea - to arm teacher's. Teachers teach. That is there passion or calling. Perhaps a few could do what is necessary, in a school shooting scenario. But it's a bad bet to assign teachers the responsibility of a LEO.
Not only does the proper, legal, and effective use of a firearm require massive amounts of training - But, it also requires the right temperament. The teachers of our children should be caring, generous, altruistic, gentle helpers. Not someone who is capable of making a split second decision to end a bad guy.

Armed, and more importantly - qualified - onsite LEO's are a better solution to protect our children.

IMHO, Our society has much greater problems that cause current events to unfold in the ugly way they are going.

Nobody would be "assigning" them involuntarily. They would be volunteers, like the math teacher who's a former Army Ranger, or the retired Lt. Col. who is rated Expert Marksman with a 1911. God no! I do NOT want some penny-loafered beta-male hipster prancing around with a dangerous item on his belt.

Yes, and we can't address any of those problems without being accused by psychotic anti-gun nuts of trying to deflect the conversation.
