Graphic video showing American hunting Canadian bear sparks outrage

normally this would be a darwin nomination but apparently this guy practiced for a long time perfecting his skill, when the moment came he hit his mark and scored a clean kill.

of course now hes sparked outrage with the peta-people or whoever... and now hes under investigation to see if he violated any Canadian hunting laws. If I understand correctly, here in Oregon you can only hunt with the weapon the tag describes.....?

I wish I could find the actual video he took but he took it down because of the controversy.

I've seen videos of people in tree stands hunting deer with a spear...

I don't see an issue with it morally , a clean kill is a clean kill, if you can do it legally or not I have no idea - not in WA you can't I know that much.

same, as long as its a clean kill its not going to matter to the animal what the weapon is. Apparently the guy practiced quite a bit perfecting his skill.... ive witnessed some rifle hunters take a deer who could use some practice with their guns...

can you share a link?

im on my phone so my google-fu is not strong (I tried)

apparently he attached a gopro camera to the spear... It would be interesting to see that point of view.

that was cool, thanks for the link.

that was quite the spear, Id like to know how he made it. The point is huge.... its interesting because with an edged point that big its way more deadly than an arrow, which is legal (and nobody protests).

I don't see a problem with it as long as the animal isn't wasted. If it is just a sport kill or a kill to see if he could with a spear then I could understand people being angry. It's hard to know from the video.

I think the if it was a clean kill and if the animal wasn't wasted statements are right on the mark.
That being stated , the fact that the guy attached a camera to his spear strikes me as bit like "killing porn".

When I hunt I feel that you need to be respectful of the animal you are hunting. Filming the animals death does not seem respectful to me.
But then I may be the weird one , because while I enjoy hunting I dislike most hunting shows . One of the reasons being is the filming of the animal being killed.
Again just how I feel and not how anyone else needs to feel or be.

I do agree there are apsects this with his filming and the way he cheered when he struc the bear that could be "killing porn"...

but then he did just spear a bear with a spear that appears he may have hand made....

Spears have fed and defended people for millions of years.
I have no doubt that if you practiced enough you could hunt lots of different game with one.

I have a spear. While not handmade by me ... It is hand made.
A fun way to practice is to tie a chunk of cedar to a string and attempt to stick it , while it hangs loose.
Another way is to have a large piece of wood upright on a table or what have you and a smaller piece of cedar on the upright. The object is to thrust with the spear , sticking the cedar without knocking over the upright piece of wood.
very tricky.

Cedar is good to use for "sticking" because it is soft and tends to "grab" the spearpoint without damaging the point.
Not sure how or if this is hunting practice ... But it is fun.

People in this world are really getting worked up over the most ridiculous things. Spear hunting has been around for millenia. The fact that it's rare among hunters only shows that we've developed better, more reliable methods to kill prey. Honestly, so long as the animal isn't made to suffer due to a bad hit that isn't a 'kill shot', then what's the problem.

If these social media warriors even thought beyond the 2 seconds it takes them to send an angry tweet, they would consider that hunting with a spear is really quite difficult and could actually lead to fewer animals killed. Isn't that what they want???

Nothing will appease these people. They don't really care it was a spear, they only care that their little forest friend, the one that would tear them apart in a heartbeat if given a chance, is now dead. Thanks to folks like Disney that have anthropomorphised every damn animal on the planet. Honestly, this really is almost no different than a bow hunt. We are heading down a very wrong path in this world.

Saw on the news today that 12 year old hunter Aryanna Gourdin is receiving death threats and such for posting pics of her big game hunting online. I'm just jealous as it seems she's been to Africa and whatnot.
Oh, spears.. I've been hankering for a Japanese spear (the simple Yari type) for some reason.. don't know if I'll ever get one though.
