I'd say the reason the debate stalls is that there's really no use for a debate. We, the pro-freedom people, have already heard everything the "other side" has to say, and the "other side" refuses to hear anything we have to say.

Why Grandpa carries a gun

· The quintessential reason why Grandpa carries a gun.

· Please take time to read this and pay particular attentionto "A Little Gun History" about half way down –staggering numbers!

Why Carry a Gun?
My old Grandpa said to me, 'Son, there comes a time inevery man's life when he stops bustin' knuckles and starts bustin' caps and usually it's when he becomes too old totake a whoopin'.'

I don't carry a gun to kill people; I carry a gun to keepfrom being killed.

I don't carry a gun to scare people; I carry a gun because sometimes this World can be a scary place.

I don't carry a gun because I'm paranoid; I carry a gunbecause there are real threats in the World.

I don't carry a gun because I'm evil; I carry a gun becauseI have lived long enough to see the evil in the World.

I don't carry a gun because I hate the government; I carry a gun because I understand the limitations of government.

I don't carry a gun because I'm angry; I carry a gun so that I don't have to spend the rest of my life hating myself for failing to be prepared.

I don't carry a gun because I want to shoot someone; I carry a gun because I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed and not on a sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon.

I don't carry a gun because I'm a cowboy; I carry a gun because, when I die and go to Heaven, I want to be acowboy.

I don't carry a gun to make me feel like a man; I carry a gun because men know how to take care of themselvesand the ones they love.

I don't carry a gun because I feel inadequate; I carry a gun because unarmed and facing three armed thugs, I am inadequate.

I don't carry a gun because I love it; I carry a gun becauseI love life and the people who make it meaningful to me.

Police protection is an oxymoron: Free citizens mustprotect themselves because police do not protect youfrom crime; they just investigate the crime after it happens and then call someone in to clean up the mess.

Personally, I carry a gun because I'm too young to die and too old to take a whoopin'!

With guns, we are 'citizens'; without them, we are 'subjects'.

Gun control in Germany was initiated by the Weimar Republic in three waves, 1919, 1920, and 1928.

The Weimar Republic was basically a liberal democracy. It pursued gun control for several reasons.

The first act, (Regulations on Weapons Ownership, 1919) was supposed to be in response to a requirement of the Treaty of Versailles that Germany destroy or turn over to the Allies all "arms, munitions, ..." and other war materials. The Treaty did not apply to private weapons, other than those intended for military use.

The second act, (Law on the Disarmament of the People, 1920) was intended to avert the possibility of an armed revolution against the Republic, which had experienced violent uprisings from both the Left and Right earlier in the year.

The third act, (Law on Firearms and Ammunition, 1928) repealed earlier ownership restrictions, replacing them with a strict licensing regime. It required one to have a permit to own or sell firearms, carry firearms (including handguns), manufacture firearms, and professionally deal in firearms and ammunition. Furthermore, the law restricted ownership of firearms to "...persons whose trustworthiness is not in question and who can show a need for a (gun) permit."

Hitlers gun control law, (German Weapons Act, 1938) superseded the 1928 law. As under the 1928 law, citizens were required to have a permit to carry a firearm and a separate permit to acquire a firearm. But under the new law:

  • Gun restriction laws applied only to handguns, not to long guns or ammunition. The 1938 revisions completely deregulated the acquisition and transfer of rifles and shotguns, as was the possession of ammunition."
  • The legal age at which guns could be purchased was lowered from 20 to 18.
  • Permits were valid for three years, rather than one year.
  • The groups of people who were exempt from the acquisition permit requirement expanded. Holders of annual hunting permits, government workers, and NSDAP members were no longer subject to gun ownership restrictions. Prior to the 1938 law, only officials of the central government, the states, and employees of the German Government Railways were exempted.
  • Manufacture of arms and ammunition continued to require a permit, with the revision that such permits would no longer be issued to Jews or any company part-owned by Jews. Jews were consequently forbidden from the manufacturing or dealing of firearms and ammunition.
Under both the 1928 and 1938 acts, gun manufacturers and dealers were required to maintain records with information about who purchased guns and the guns' serial numbers. These records were to be delivered to a police authority for inspection at the end of each year.

So the roots of German gun control came from a Liberal Democracy, rather than the Nazis!

Does this resemble current events?
