I flew out of Chicago to Portland Friday night. I was supposed to fly out Saturday morning but paid $75 to change my flight to Friday. As soon as I got there and checked my bag the kiosk offered a $200 voucher to delay myself. It was less than 2 hours since I paid the $75. By the time the flight was leaving they were looking for 4 volunteers to take $800 and a hotel. If I didn't need to be home sooner I could've taken my original Saturday flight and made $725. I don't understand why they let me change my flight in the first place but I made it home Friday night. United Sucks!

God bless our corporations who save $1,000's by not offering enough to entice a traveler to give up their seat, while probably losing millions as a result of bad publicity.

And also, "bless you" to those who defend their astonishing stupidity.

Anyone who will place themselves at a risk legally by THINKING they will somehow be allowed to stay on the plane by fighting it like a child with a temper tantrum has got to be extremely degraded emotionally and mentally - badly....

RVTECH "Anyone who will place themselves at a risk legally by THINKING they will somehow be allowed to stay on the plane by fighting it like a child with a temper tantrum has got to be extremely degraded emotionally and mentally - badly...."

I think UA and the d-bag doc screwed up. I'm just having some fun with this story.

Hope all is well in CO. I miss it.

Thank You Dungannon! And all the Vets on this forum.

And by the way you are required to get as much as $1200 in compensation for giving up your seat.
So I would always push for that amount. Like any other offer/sales they will start low and as they get more desperate will go up to $1200.

And believe me I would be totally pizzed!
I think it's F'd up, but they can do it and do it often.
Until they chang the rules, it's what you sign up for flying the friendly skies.

As a customer, your Right is to choose to discontinue being a customer.

Gotta disagree just a bit... you're a PAYING CUSTOMER, and you MOST CERTAINLY ARE owed a seat. They exchanged that seat for YOUR money. Now if you endanger others or interfere with the flight operations, then THAT'S a different story. If they "overbooked" a scheduled flight, then they sold you something they didn't have... and THAT is fraud.

Indeed it is! Or... it would be, had the person not agreed to their policy of doing this when he purchased the ticket.
But honestly, I already avoided United when possible due to The-Bad-Flight-Experience-To-End-All-Experiences -- but now I'll just avoid them flat out. Seriously, this is what they think of their customers.

They should have to up the ante till someone accepts the deal. The cost now is going to be much higher than it would have been if they offered $1000 or $1200. At some point the money is going to do it and get their seats.

Hopefully it teaches them to judge capacity better.

People need to remember a couple things here. ALL airlines over book. They do it for a reason. Now and then this happens. You do NOT have a right to the seat. In all that fine print few read they explain this. The rest of the people on the plane then get held up because some guy. He was told by Mom all his life how important he was. Most important man in the world according to him. People are screaming about boycotting the airline. To which the airline is having a great laugh. People who don't like the way it's run are free to book passage on private jets if they want to pay. Last time I flew I almost saw this. Last leg of flight after long delay I was just trying to get from one city to the next. The delay was long enough that I would have just rented a car and drove if not for some luggage checked already. Get on and some clown like this does not want to turn off his damn phone. Starts a pissing match with the woman telling him they will not take off until he does. He took it almost to the point they were going to have Cops remove him. Meanwhile the rest of us sit there and get held up even more while an adult has a temper tantrum.

If this passenger was not a threat or causing harm to himself or others ... Then force should not have be used to remove him.
Since force was used here... that means it might be used again .... maybe even against you.

I wonder if instead of being a Asian male* , if he was a "Sweet young thing" ... would it have played out the way it did or if the reactions would be the same?
Or if he was your dad or grandfather?
But that really isn't my point...

Airline overbooked? ... Falls under "Not my fault."
I should not be made the solution to a problem of someone else's making.
I don't like the offer you make ... then make a better offer or move on to someone else.
Using force on someone who isn't a threat is not acceptable to me in this case.
Andy

*Edit to add , I am not playing the race or gender card here ... I would ask these questions no matter the race or gender of the ejected passenger... if the circumstances were the same ...

Ummm.

$800 in flight CREDITS don't mean bubblegum to me.

I'm absolutely agreeing with Stomper here. With the amount I've flown I have been on a plane where they asked for volunteers... everyone said "FU" and nobody left.

Overselling a plane then removing people (by force or other) for CREW to fly.... if your flight crew needs to get back, that's on YOUR DIME not the customers fault.

Selling a product you don't have is fraud. I'll never fly United Airlines again.

But it was Little Lord Fauntleroy and he didn't want to!

Just to play devils advocate - some doctors schedules are booked out months, asking him to get off not only is an issue for him but punishes a days worth of appointments for people who may have been waiting for that day to finally arrive.

I know I'm thrilled to get into a specialist after waiting 3-6 months for my appointment.

For those of you with reading comprehension problems:

I am not advocating how he handled things

I am not advocating for how he was treated

I am advocating the overbook standard.

**if I really needed to be somewhere I'd leave some wiggle room - but that just me personally.

Soon the follow up thread to this will be
Guy gets PAID after being hauled off a plane like a criminal....after paying for his intentionally overbooked flight.
And PAID well too.
This was total bullshnit, they ask for volunteers, then start carrying folks off?
They will pay dearly, and probably the cops or whatever involved too.
I'd never take united again in my life.
