'Astroturf' versus real grassroots in Evergreen State

While many eyes will be focused on today's planned demonstration in front of the Thomas S. Foley federal courthouse in Spokane, an equally important, if not more so, story has unfolded over the past week in Olympia, where true grassroots action by Second Amendment activists put the brakes on what appeared to be a runaway train of gun control, and brought gun prohibitionists whining for money they don't need in an e-mail appeal.

Love it Dave; Astroturf versus real grassroots is a great analogy...:D

I was also stymied at how unbelievably evil the defense is to expect someone to be taken to the legal cleaners before changing a bad, bad, bad law!!!:mad::mad:

There's no appeasing the gun lobby.

Extreme Risk Protection Orders was exactly the kind of bill the gun lobby and their allies in the Legislature said they could support.

It was bipartisan. It was about keeping guns out of the hands of those most at risk of perpetrating the next mass shooting – those experiencing a mental health crisis. It addressed all of the Second Amendment concerns raised by the gun lobby. And it did nothing to infringe on the rights of stable, law-abiding citizens.

Yet, despite widespread support – and despite admitting that the bill could prevent tragedies – elected leaders in the Legislature conspired with the gun lobby to kill the bill. And they succeeded.

No matter how many hurdles the bill cleared, House Majority Leader Pat Sullivan and his allies found a way to block it at every turn. And Speaker Frank Chopp could do nothing to stop it.

The politicians in Olympia have failed the people of Washington again. They have failed the victims and survivors of gun violence. This is a shameful betrayal – and not one we take lightly. That's why we're launching the Hold Them Accountable Fund. <broken link removed>

This bill might be dead. But this fight isn't over. The mission of the Hold Them Accountable Fund is to shine a bright light on legislators who conspire with the gun lobby and hold them accountable for their behavior. They think they can do the bidding of the gun lobby without consequence. We are going to prove them wrong.

We're moving aggressively to defeat the gun lobby's frivolous lawsuit against Initiative 594 – our new universal background checks law.

We are seeking to intervene in the lawsuit as co-defendants, so we can stand with the Attorney General to defend the will of the people of Washington. The Attorney General has now moved to dismiss the case because nobody has been injured or had their rights violated by universal background checks – much less the gun lobbyists who filed suit. So, we agree with the Attorney General that they don't have standing to sue.

Make no mistake, Julius – no matter how the judge rules, this fight over the future of common-sense gun laws isn't going away anytime soon. They've got deep pockets, and the gun lobby will be sure to appeal. We need to be ready to fight it all the way to victory.

<broken link removed> We're building a grassroots-powered movement to end gun violence in Washington, and we need all of our supporters to step up at this critical time.

Thank you for standing with us!

Stephanie

I bet that those WAGR people are already well-funded, have a highly paid staff, and that they are actually collecting funds to feather their own nest. I would also bet that they probably have a few workers on their payroll that couldn't pass a background check if their lives depended on it. If anyone has any information on such topics, I hope they will publish it -- soon.

Meet Bloomberg's Out-Of-State Operatives In Washington
Posted by Michael Strickland on Sunday, March 1st, 2015 at 8:57 am

<broken link removed>
Clockwise from upper left: Meera Bhardwaj, Geoff Potter, Lisa Nikodem, and Emily Parzybok

Washington has been one of the target states for Bloomberg and his gun control efforts. Using strategies similar to Obama's Organizing For America, combined with a multi million dollar public relations push, they were able to successfully pass a ballot initiative that would mandate background checks for private firearm transactions (though, by a considerably smaller margin than their initial polling).

So who are the folks working behind the scenes to make this happen? You probably won't be surprised that many of them are from out of state, shipped in to "organize".

<broken link removed>
Meera Bhardwaj, 2012, working on the Obama campaign in North Carolina

Let's start off with <broken link removed>. She has been the lead organizer for Everytown/Moms Demand Action in Washington for about a year and a half. She still uses her 402 area code phone number, which is a Nebraska number, which is where she went to college from 2007 to 2010.

From Nebraska, she was dispatched to North Carolina in 2012 to work as a field organizer on the Obama campaign, which she quickly parlayed into a gig with Moms Demand Action shortly after the organization was formed.

At some point in the summer of 2013, as I 594 was launching into full signature gathering mode, Bhardwaj was called up from North Carolina and dispatched to Washington, and promoted to statewide organizer.

At some point between late June and early August, Meera Bhardwaj was dispatched to Washington.

Meera Bhardwaj blames shootings on "weak gun laws" instead of criminals
She was very active organizing throughout 2014, helping to pass I 594.

As of February 10th, she is still the statewide organizer for Bloomberg.

<broken link removed> <broken link removed> is the "Communications Director" for Washington Alliance For Gun Responsibility, which received $2,625,000 from Everytown, MAIG, and a direct contribution from Bloomberg himself in 2014.

Mr. Potter has a history that put him at Syracuse University and Iona College in New York, as well as working for Hillary Clinton's staff in D.C. when she was a Senator. He operated in Minnesota in 2008, before landing in Seattle, where he bounced around between a few short term gigs and eventually ended up with WAGR.

<broken link removed> <broken link removed> is an "Organizing Manager" for Moms Demand Action in Washington. She has spent time working for PIRG in Eugene, Oregon and Chicago as an organizer and canvass director. While in the windy city, she was a Campaign Director for a group called Environment Illinois. She's relatively new to Moms Demand Action, as she's only been working for them in Washington since January. Ironic that someone from the murder capitol of the U.S. comes into another state to lecture them about gun laws.

<broken link removed> <broken link removed> is a "Community Relations Manager" for <broken link removed> , after previously running the Get-Out-The-Vote operation for WAGR in the 2014 election. It looks like she was originally from Washington, but moved to Boston at one point and largely stated out of politics until 2014. After stints in Nambia and Boulder, CO, she ended up back in Washington and went to work for the Bloomberg shill organizations.

At least <broken link removed>, chief petitioner of I 594, is actually from Washington and has lived there for some time. Though. Ms. Stumbo is a marketing expert, like Shannon Watts and Jenn Lynch, so of course she knows how to package up the message and sell it to the masses.
To summarize, regardless of the state you're in, when you see the MDA/Everytown people in the media and at events, it is highly likely that they are only in your state temporarily, to impose the wishes of their billionaire master, and they will soon be moving on to a different state after their damage is done.

If only those sad people had a cohesive brain thought between them then, and only then, would they be targeting criminals and the justice system!!!!
Criminals do the crime, get caught (sometimes), go to court and get a slap on the wrist and get set free to roam the streets to re-offend!!! That really CHAPS my hide!!!!

as long as wagr and csgv remain astroturf organizations, true grassroots organizations like nra, saf/ccrkba etc. can stand up to them.

While eyes were focused on the Selma golden jubilee celebrating bygone battles, a current-day civil-rights battle was being waged — and ignored by the mainstream media. It took place at the Spokane, Washington, federal courthouse, where armed Second Amendment supporters confronted federal officials.

And the feds backed down.

The March 6 rally, organized by a group calling itself "Liberty for All" (LFA), was a response to the arrest of military veteran and former Yakima County sheriff candidate Anthony Bosworth. A staunch constitutionalist, open-carry advocate, and LFA leader, Bosworth was participating in the "Our State, Our Rights" rally near Spokane's federal courthouse February 25 with an unloaded rifle slung over his shoulder. This didn't sit well with federal agents, who approached Bosworth, asked for identification, and accused him of breaking the law. But Bosworth and his supporters say the feds are the lawbreakers.

The sticking point is over the federal statute that prohibits possession of weapons in federal property (i.e., buildings), but not on federal property. InfoWars relates the exchange Bosworth had with federal officials, writing:

While inquiring on the alleged need to provide ID, Bosworth was accused of being in violation of federal gun laws according to a DHS agent on scene.

"It's against federal law," the agent claimed. "18 U.S. C 930 says it's illegal."

Bosworth, correctly citing the law's wordage, asserted that the restriction only applied to the inside of federal buildings.

"On federal property," the DHS agent argued. "You're on federal property."

18 U.S. Code 930 in fact never once uses the words "on federal property," but instead repeatedly refers to the possession of a firearm inside a federally-run building.

InfoWars then cites the relevant federal code:

(a) Except as provided in subsection (d), whoever knowingly possesses or causes to be present a firearm or other dangerous weapon in a Federal facility (other than a Federal court facility), or attempts to do so, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 1 year, or both.

None of this mattered, however, and Bosworth was handcuffed and hauled away. Even more strikingly, it's alleged that his gun rights guaranteed by the Second Amendment weren't the only ones violated. As Lynn Finney of the Jackson Press wrote, "He was never read his rights; his gun was taken, illegally; he was refused an attorney, although asking for one at least six times; and he was interrogated illegally for sev
