I wonder about the weather on the 28th. Camp out perhaps? I can't wait to camp out the night before a cleanup! Those are so much fun! I think I'll be doing a lot of camping this year!
There's no camping in that area but if you've got an R.V there's a casino not to far away w/free parking or maybe something else could be worked out. I'll check the weather in the future

I usually do the dispersed camping thing. Sometimes right at the shooting site! I know, not a good idea! If I'm by myself, I'll find a camp ground and pay for a camp site for one night. If I have a couple folks to join me, we usually find a fine dispersed site to pitch a tent or three. It's a lot of fun! I'll check with BLM about dispersed camping in that area, but, I'm sure it's okay, as it is most all public lands (just might not be able to do an open fire pit).

Geez! You sound just like me! I've got four of those that I want to be like! From early 20's to mid 30's. And they're all awesome kids!
You've got "4"!!!!!! I can only set my sight's so high. I don't want to shoot over the moon. Dad to Dad just be happy & very thankful. Man to man, I never raised Marshall, I just stood behind & watched his steps. He was born the way he is & I'm still in awe. You have 3 more??? I thought I was blessed.

Our cleanup, on Mar 28th, could be in jeopardy of happening! The primary need we have is the need of trash disposal. The BLM has not committed to taking care of that part (yet) and has recommended I talk with Polk County Dump Stoppers. So I did.

PC Dump Stoppers does not have a current agreement with the BLM, and it sounds like they won't have one ready by March 28th. Dump Stoppers says they don't have funding to cover it. I asked what they would charge and he said is about $300 for the day. Pretty darn cheap considering other disposal outfits charge around $1000/day.

So here's my primary objective before all else... Find a local business who would like to sponsor the disposal of the trash we remove from the forest. If one business won't sponsor the whole amount, perhaps we can find two to split the cost. $150 each is not much at all! They will donate the funds to Trash No Land and I will pay Polk County Dump Stoppers.

I'm meeting up with @UnionMillsNW this Saturday to survey the sites and road conditions. We will have a much better idea of the volume of trash and where it is. I'll know what size of a dumpster to order, where it will be located and where we'll focus most of our cleanup efforts.

BLM is good with the date and very appreciative of our interest to do this. They certainly will be present at the cleanup. I put a bug in his ear to be thinking of a closer working relationship with shooters and we'd like to discuss this at our morning safety meeting. We should be considering a Liaison type person who can visit the forest and report findings. I've put a call out, in the recent past, for representatives of Trash No Land to sign on as liaisons in various forests throughout Oregon & Washington. This will be a good opportunity for someone to help save some shooting places!

So, if you know of a business(s) in the Salem/Dallas area that would like some extra publicity by sponsoring the disposal of trash, let me know. Otherwise, I'll hit the phone and stop/visit some stores when I'm down there.

I can't schedule a cleanup without a way to dispose of the trash. The Trash No Land organization is not financially strong enough to cover disposal at this time. I would love to have the finances available to cover disposal costs at most or all of our cleanups! We wouldn't need any permissions, just go do it! One day, perhaps... One day!

I would suggest contacting D&O Garbage. They are our local residential garbage disposal service, and as far as I know have both the Marion County and Polk County contracts. Perhaps they would help out or make a donation.

I will pledge $50.

Nice. Hang on to that and we'll figure it out soon. Actually, that would be really cool if shooters covered the cost. Better than a business! We'll see how things go and if any business steps up to do it.

Sure appreciate it, Cavedweller!

These guys are supposed to be super environmentally conscious, but I think ownership is pretty left-wing. Maybe if you don't mention guns and emphasize clean-up.

Hmmm... If we could get someone like that to sponsor, it'd be kind of like reaching across the isle. I'll give it a try.

Hey, at least they sell Beef!

I like the idea of reaching out to some publicly left-of-center businesses. Guns or no guns I think we can reach across all aisles and find some common ground in keeping our country clean and beautiful.

With that being said I don't think it would hurt to call up some local gun stores and outfitters. From the Mom and Pop shop to box stores. It's good business for them.

They'd be advertising to the right crowd.

@Cogs , Would you happen to have an outline of what to say/not to say when calling to solicit support?

Basically to let them know you are promoting responsible recreation on public lands and will be doing a cleanup at target shooting sites in the forest. Let them know you're working with the BLM, County Sheriff's department and the Trash No Land nonprofit organization. They usually want an EIN Number. That's our Federal ID number assigned to us when we filed for 501(c)3 status. Get their email address and I'll be happy to provide them with that number. It's proof that we are a legal charitable organization.

If they ask about Trash No Land, we are an environmentally concerned organization that focuses on promoting responsible shooting on public lands. We promote the rules, ethics, public and personal safety, fire prevention and natural resource protection. (I wouldn't mention the After Party! Unless they plan to attend and are shooting enthusiasts! ;) )

We did the Gooseneck Rd thing today. My guide was @UnionMillsNW and we were joined by @Rem700..300 and his son Matt. Our mission; Survey the shooting sites, evaluate the volume of trash and determine a location for dumpster & meeting area.

I will say one positive thing about the whole area... The trash level was not bad at all! Not near what I'm used to seeing in the forests around the Portland Metro area.

HOWEVER,,, the amount of bad stuff was plenty! More than enough!

I hate to post pics about trashed and destroyed shooting sites because it makes all shooters look bad and adds fuel to the fire which could result in closures. So, I've become reluctant to post stuff like this. But after seeing what's going on out there, I feel that I gotta tell it like it is and hope we get enough support to change this.

Here's what we saw along the Gooseneck Rd...

Be thankful we have responsible people like @UnionMillsNW , @Cavedweller , @jimihaze , @BrandonOR and @conditor22 out there watching our backs and cleaning up as they go. I thank each of you for doing what you can. Now we need to reach a few others!

Mentioned it in post #65. That's okay. It wasn't a cleanup, just a fact finding mission. I got a good idea of how many shooting places there are and the info I needed before announcing any formal cleanup event. I've got to find out about the road work and logging activity that might be scheduled for end of March. I'll know next week. Lots of culverts are installed now and the new gravel on the roadways is really nice and smooth! Too smooth! Makes you drive too fast around those blind corners!

Actually, the trash that's there right now could easily be cleaned up by just a small group of people with 3-4 pickups. Not really a need for a big event and dumpster at this time. However, come the end of March, it could be a different story. I'm counting on you and other locals to report as we get closer.

If we didn't do a big community cleanup event, we wouldn't be reaching many who need to hear our message. So, I'm not so thrilled about just getting a couple folks to go get what's there. It would have a greater impact if many were there and see first hand what it's like. Then we might start getting more folks on board with promoting responsible shooting. Also, the BLM would see more shooter support if we did a larger cleanup event.

Really, what I'd like to do is figure out a way to remove all the downed logs and shot up stumps so that it doesn't look so bad on shooters. And somehow, try to deter shooting in the spots where there is no backstop.

No one wants to ruin their chain saw on these logs. Don't blame them! What can be done and how can we get those logs out of there?

Well according to your report, what's the point in going any further? I only responded to an abandoned car & downed tree's along with other abuses reported on this site. You reported it's not that bad so I'll go with that. If people pick up after themselves than that's all that's needed. Responsible people are just that (responsible) if others trash a place that's on them, I've decided I'm not going to participate in cleaning up the trash of those who don't care. I can afford to join a shooting club where these kind of things are not a problem. You have cautioned me on jumping the gun & now being tempted to drive to fast on a smooth (gravel) road. Wow you must be all knowing, quite astounding considering you don't even remotely know me. Do you even run a C.B radio on logging roads? Did you call out your mile marker as you drove in to alert commercial traffic in the area, I believe they operate on ch.32? If so good for you. Don't placate people you don't know.

Gee Jim, you read a lot into that. Wow. Okay then. Hope we can meet some time and work that out. I don't claim to know all, or much, but I do like to think I have common sense. And shooting trees is no sense at all. That was my big problem with everything I saw today. I don't know anything about trying to caution anyone about jumping the gun, much less any tempting to drive too fast on the new gravel. I had no intention of attacking you what so ever. You are right, I don't run a CB radio, but I use caution around every corner (which is quite the accomplishment for me, knowing my past days of loving to slide around corners!).

Sorry if you took that wrong. I wasn't trying to placate anyone.

All I've read is the text you've written, why add to it, I take it as is. I've only responded to that. For the record, even in my youth 18 or so yrs. old I've threatened forcefully & made idiot drivers/sliding around the corner type, pull over & I walked home from the middle of nowhere w/o food, water or warmth!!! We have nothing in common, so leave it at that. I'will vacate this site & be done w/it.

A lot can be lost over text message and the internet. Let's all remember to "be excellent to each other"

Sometimes we have misunderstandings, sometimes we have disagreements, at the end of the day we all probably have a lot more in common then we have differences.

One of the things we have in common is 99.99% of us want to keep our country beautiful. If that means cleaning together or cleaning alone, at least our country is getting clean.

I think we can unite in wanting public lands and a love of safe shooting to pass on to the next generation.

Thank you @Cogs and @Rem700..300 for taking time out of their day to scout out the area and plan for the future.
