Because they're criminals….. criminals are typically (but not always) dumb. Those guys were dumb.

Experienced it first hand as well, wife 2.0 is from Peru, it's a different world there. Women carry their purses in front of them, not on the shoulder or off towards their backs, like here. Very little jewelry and never flashing cash. First couple of trips were stressful, then I learned to not stick out like an American…

It looked like there was a driveway there. They may have a gate or a garage. After what just happened I'd be locking the car up good if it were me.

In some Latin American nations, there is no explicit right to self-defense. If someone dies, you may be charged. In El Salvador, for example, you must plead your case in court under the defense of "extreme circumstances."
