Not mentioned yet? To Hell and Back. Staring Audie Murphy as Audie Murphy.
How many movies star a genuine medal of honor war hero?:D

Yeah, all of 'em! Any one mention "The Patriot" and "Shenandoah"?

The Devils Brigade was filmed around Utah, some in the Salt Lake Valley, where I lived. We used to ride our Trail 90s around the foothills and after they had done the movie there were places where they had built roads and left burned out military vehicles kind of in the middle of nowhere. It was pretty neat chugging along on a dirt road and going by a burned truck.

There is only one real favorite for me. Just because I spent many hours of my youth doing yard work for a fellow that was a commander of a U boat. ( and no he wasn't a wanna be, his service is documented on u boat.net) As he got older he did share quite a few story's.

Das Boot!!! The original directors uncut version which is 4 hours 53min runtime. It's like a whole other movie when watching this version. Explains allot of things not detailed in the 2hr theatrical version.
It can be found on Amazon pretty cheap.

Maybe there is less respect for sailors, but I really like "In Harm's Way" with John Wayne and Kirk Douglas. Haven't seen any mention of that one.
Any of those with the classic actors is good for me.

I don't know how many people have the channel AHC? American Hero's Channel. there is a quite a few shows on it with a ton of actual footage. It's amazing to think of the military have men with cameras out there filming during the battles.

I saw Platoon in the theater when I was a kid. The scene where they fall asleep in the jungle and the NVA set off the claymores.. man that was intense.

There are also lots of cool AR variants in that movie. CAR-15, M16, maybe a 605...

Anyway, I recently re-watched Platoon and it still holds up IMO.

The old school war movies don't seem realistic to me.
My list would include :
Saving Private Ryan - this one ruined me for liking the old movies and I don't relish the idea of watching it again due to its realistic nature.
Greyhound - good depiction of the North Atlantic convoys although "Hollywoodized" in some regards
Platoon - my favorite Viet Nam movie
Hell Below - The Smithsonian Channel series - I think the best submarine warfare portrayal.
Documentary/re-enactment of actual war patrols.
