So, I thought I would toss this one out there for discussion: what are you favorite war films? It can be any time, place, or subject matter. It could be historically interesting, thought-provoking, off-beat, heart-rending, surreal, wacky, or some combination of those.

Thanks for sharing.:)

To answer my own question, in no particular order:

  • Sergeant York (1941)
  • The Longest Day (1962)
  • For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943)
  • A Walk in the Sun (1945)
  • The Man Who Never Was (1956)
  • The Great Escape (1963)
  • Midway (1976)
  • Saving Private Ryan (1998)
  • Stripes (1981)
  • Glory (1989)
  • Where Eagles Dare (1968)
  • Patton (1970)
  • Platoon (1986)
  • Full Metal Jacket (1987)
  • Sink the Bismark! (1960)
  • Aces High (1976)
  • Kelly's Heroes (1970)
  • Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970)
  • Gallipoli (1981)
  • Red Dawn (1984)
  • Dr. Strangelove (1964)
  • Downfall (2004)
  • All Quiet on the Western Front (1930)
  • ¡Ay, Carmela! (1990)
  • Casablanca (1942)
  • Das Boot (1981)
  • Paths of Glory (1957)
  • The Desert Fox (1951)
  • A Bridge Too Far (1977)
  • Empire of the Sun (1987)
  • On the Beach (1959)
  • The Big Red One (1980)
And I'm sure quite a few I am forgetting at the present. ;)

Gettysburg
Gods and Generals (I'm still annoyed that we were not able to go see this in the theater)
Sergeant York
Casablanca
Red Dawn

All considered date movies by @CountryGent :s0116:

If war is the only qualifier I'll add some SciFI

Star Wars:A New Hope
Rougue One:A Star wars Story
The Last Starfighter

and i know it is a stretch, but it is set in WWII

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Gettysburg
Gods and Generals (I'm still annoyed that we were not able to go see this in the theater)

I can't believe I forgot these two. Both are great flicks. Stephen Lang as Stonewall Jackson in Gods and Generals was a fantastic performance. Come to think of it, he was Pickett in Gettysburg.

A few more modern ones:

Black Hawk Down
12 Strong
13 Hours
Zero Dark Thirty

As for TV shows:
Over There - pretty decent but more of a in lives of vs another 1 conflict coverage film
Generation Kill

can't remember some of the others but i'd assume if you search for the listed above ones you may find them related.

Books:
BRING THE HEAT: Three Live Rounds, Not Three Cups of Tea
by Mike Tucker
Outlaw Platoon: Heroes, Renegades, Infidels, and the Brotherhood of War in Afghanistan
by Sean Parnell

Ahh....
If we are going to talk books...
For non fiction:
Shots fired in Anger , by John George
Company Commander , by Charles McDonald
Up Front , by Bill Mauldin

For fiction :
Fields of Fire , by James Webb

I like 300. I love the thought of 300 Spartans (and whoever else may have been helping them) hold off a million Persians (or whatever the number was).

I see a lot of dislike for Saving Private Ryan, but I love that movie.

Blackhawk Down always gets me in the feelers.

Bridge over the River Kwai

Force 10 From Navarone

Three Kings

Not a movie but that Turn TV series was great. That learned me up on a lot of things and had me doing a bunch of research.

I saw Blackhawk Down in the theaters....but
It was / is a difficult movie for me...as I was there during the fight in question.
Never thought I see a movie about a battle I was in...kinda surreal to say the least....

One of the pilots killed was a close friend of my dad's. They were in the same class in flight school. I think his last name was Frank. They both flew hueys and Frank transitioned to Blackhawks and my dad went to Cobras.

Which war?

Braveheart

The Patriots

Gettysburg

Red Dawn

Merrills Marauders

Battle Los Angeles

We were Soldiers

Platoon

Defiance

Hell is for Heros

Great Escape

Terminator Salvation

Last of the Mohicans

That' enough for now.:D

Somehow I forgot The Guns of Navarone* (1961) and The Dirty Dozen (1967). Both are worth a mention.

* Funny side story. My father used to shoot with friends and coworkers back in the day, including trips out to the dunes to blast away at bowling pins, and other targets. My papa, who is wacky too, dubbed the group "The Guns of Florence", being that most of the men were from that area and we just south of said. :D
