Number one garbage wood is....Piss fir, I won't bother with, Digger (grey) pine I don't care for at all and will not bring it home. I will burn anything I can get if I have to. For the last ten years Douglas fir was the most common for me to burn as I had a steady supply of dying trees every year. I'm not afraid to burn Ponderosa pine and have burned a metric boat load of it over the years. I have burned soft maple and it's okay for filler wood kinda like poplar. I never had any big amounts of those. We burned a bunch of juniper growing up and it's good wood that makes a lot of crackling noise...just a bear to cut and split.

My two favorite to burn ,that we have lots of, is oak and cedar. I like the oak for the BTU's and longevity. I like the cedar to get things going and to have a fire that is not so hot.

Douglas fir is a decent wood to burn because it has no ash but it has to burn hot in order to keep burning so that means it burns fast and won't hold coals all night like oak.

I keep 12 cord in rotation and I am almost exclusively burning oak and Douglas fir currently. I no longer have my property where I cut all my Douglas fir and I no longer work in logging so I lost all my places to cut wood for free. I have burned wood my whole life and cut all my own if I can. I am going to try and stick with just oak and cedar but I have a few Eastern pines at home that will end up in the pile when they die. I have burned a dozen of them over the years as they die off.

This year might just be the first year I buy it split and delivered.....well see, it's my first year in retirement and maybe I deserve a break from all the work.....I will never give up burning wood, but just might give up cutting and splitting it.
