It came as something of a surprise to me a number of years ago when I found this out. Non-citizens can buy guns if they have a Green Card. But today, I did a private transfer to a non-citizen who didn't have a Green Card. He is a UW student here on a student visa. He's bought guns here in Wash. legally before. Long guns, as he's age 20, not quite old enough to buy a pistol. He came to the dealer with a folder full of paperwork, passport, Wash. state hunting license and I don't know what-all. The dealer hadn't done this before either but the student had a Wash. driver's license so there was an ID number to plug in. The fellow gave me the money, the dealer said it was okay for me to shove off so I did. And he didn't call back so I guess the deal was done.

I asked the student, "Can you take this home when you go back?" He said, "Are you kidding? You can't own any guns privately there."

Green card holders can also join the military and die for this country. Many of them do.

I served with one.

Yep. A greencard holder, or correctly "Permanent Resident Alien" has the same rights, except voting. Non greencard holders need a valid hunting license I believe.

Makes sense, doesn't it? It is, after all, an inalienable right.

Should you have to be a citizen to get the rights that our society feels are given by god?

Actually the law is they have to have a hunting license or a CPL.
The WA state hunter Education class is the cheapest way to do that. We see a lot of foreign nationals in class. They are not there to get their hunting license they need the safety class so they can get their CPL. With that they can purchase firearms.

There are a few other "restrictions" iirc from when I was a lowly green card holder ...

1. It's hard to get out of state concealed permits. I couldn't get an Oregon concealed permit when I wasn't a "citizen" of Oregon or the U.S.
2. A green card holder is still not allowed to look through certain high end thermal and night vision scopes. I'm assuming this applies to other advanced military technology.

Those were the main two that were gun related. I used to have to get escorted everywhere (including the bathroom) when I was in certain military bases too. But that was probably expected because I was a civilian contractor.

The military offers a "fast track citizenship" program to Green Card holders who serve special programs. Took a Punjabi shooting who was in the program.
I work with Pakistani and Saudi citizens who have purchased pistols, shotguns and rifles here in the US.

If I recall some level of clearances are limited. I understand anyone the government wants to have a clearance will get a clearance. I had a friend that hosted foreign college students. One Korean young man decide to join the Army and said his job was going to be water purification. I asked if anyone had talked to him about being a linguist and he told me they wouldn't give him the clearance needed to be one.

When I worked on DoD contracts, I was allowed most places most other civilians were allowed, including certain areas you would think non-citizens would not be allowed. One area I could and had to drive past, but nobody was allowed to take pics of, and only designated employees were allowed access. That was Elmendorf which has (had?) several listening posts back in the days when the Soviets were still the Soviets.
