It's good to be prepared. Murderbums generally go straight to the hammer aisle at Walmart and you'll get your throat cut on the bus, set on fire at Denny's, and everything in between etc. etc. all while just minding your own business.
Yep to paraphrase Clint smith, "you never know when an attack will occur or what it will look like".

Fe Taco Bell in Sandy Oregon throat slashed, an inch away from being dead.

An advantage of a cane of the sort I have is it is classified as a medical device, not a weapon. It is legal to take it anywhere, including on a plane. It is illegal according to the laws against discriminating against those with disabilities to deny access to anywhere because of the cane. This is not true of canes with knobs on the ends. And sword canes aren't even legal in oregon, as far as I know. There are plastic copies of the relevant law you can buy from canemasters for $10.

There are lots of videos on YouTube about fighting with canes.

If you are trying to use the cane as nonlethal force, avoid hitting the head.

Excellent points. I did a unit on staff and bo (and staff and bo with hooks). For combat purposes these are identical to canes in all but length. We also did not target the head, but that was for safety reasons. We also avoided most limb hooks unless we were doing low speed practice, as they also posed a high risk of injury.

But, to be fair, most of us were way more interested in getting back to swordplay. It was faster, more dynamic and we were allowed to do a lot more since the practice swords has less mass than the staffs and so posed less of a kinetic risk. I use to be highly competitive with a sword, I never considered my competency with a staff or bo higher than "barely". Honestly with those canes I would probably just revert to form and use it like a training sword with intent to harm. A solid thrust to the shortribs would take out just about anyone. I know that works on me way better than pepper spray from experience.

For hot sauce I would stick with Sabre Red, Fox Labs or POM. All are order-able online. Remember that the stuff does have a shelf life so stay on top of the expiration dates and replace when needed. My understanding is that the hot sauce is still hot but it's the propellent that does slowly leak out over time.

So what you are saying is that when all the propellant leaks away you can still use them for soups and rubs?

Sadly this kind of thing is becoming all too common in cites. The pubic transportation in Seattle is becoming something I would do anything to avoid if I still lived up there.

That happened FAST. Too fast.

Also, in the video she's wearing a blond wig, her actual picture: 1698941137781.png

All because she was asked by the man she attacked to stop berating the employees. Got 7 years for second degree assault (should have been attempted murder) and she already has priors in Maine. Hope she gets good and shanked in prison.

Think she was friends with guy who had voices in his head…. Lol.

All the situations I've witnessed or been a part of in bubblegum town Pdx happened extremely fast. Strangely though when I was attacked the first part happened fast but the part that required action seemed to happen in super slow motion. "He is going to do (a) or (b) and then I'm gonna do (c)" was the script in my head and then it unfolded exactly that way but seemingly in slow-mo. Weirdly relaxed and in slow motion. Must be fight/flight response related.

For me OC has been an on again, off again thing. For a while there I didn't really see the value in a non-law enforcement context - cops have to have a means of getting a person to comply, i.e. during arrest, but I figured avoidance and de-escalation would likely be adequate for my needs. However, recently I've seen several cases where the perpetrator actively follows and continues to harass the victim, making avoidance a much more difficult proposition, but also does not engage in behavior that meets the threshold of "imminent threat of death or serious bodily harm". Seeing that has reinforced for me the importance of having a non-lethal option on hand, and brought me back to where I was before... With a can of OC that is bulky, uncomfortable, and inconvenient to carry. Had not heard of POM until today, thanks all for sharing. Looks way better for EDC than my current one.

Right. The times I've been attacked everything has seemed to slow down, and my thinking, which is fast and original anyway, becomes even faster and more original. My muscles are stronger too. This has the down side that with semi autos I can't tell how hard I am engaging the trigger. So I like the long DA trigger pull of revolvers for SD. My pupils also contract to pin pricks. Found that out when a neighbor thought to surprise scare me with a fake attack from behind when I was gardening. I heard him and turned, the counter attack already instantly in action. Glanced up to see the face and ceased counterattack before it began. Then guy was staggering backwards, his face white. "You were going to kill me!" he said. "Dont ever do that again," I said slowly, softly. "It is very dangerous!"

Then I went inside and looked in the mirror, wondering how the guy had known I was going to kill him. As far as I knew my face had been expressionless . YIPE! Pin head sized pupils. And scariest face I've ever seen.

I think its an entirely different state of consciousness. My brother has it too. Most people dont, apparently. Its something way beyond the normal fight or flight response. I think this state is what accounts for occasional reports of super human strength in emergencies. A person being able to lift something very heavy that had fallen on a loved one, for example, that they normally couldn't budge. The first time I was under serious attack this altered state kicked in slowly. Somewhere along the line it became instantaneous. Have lived in nice safe places the last few decades and have experienced no SD energencies. But I don't doubt that whatever that is is still in there if needed.

Yeah I am the same way. I don't "jump scare" I "jump homicide". One of my buddies tried that with me when I was coming home from work; he hid behind the front door with the plan to bearhug me from behind. I pivoted, stepped for distance and swept my jacket before I recognized him. He double over laughing while he wheezed "I though I was going to die". Now it's a big in-joke with my circle of people, including the jab "well I know how I am going to commit suicide".

It is definitely is not a common condition. No idea where it came from, but my theory is some of us skipped pare of the "fight, flight or freeze" instinct class. I only have one of those responses. . .

Flight would have been useless for me, even when I was a young broad. Just about any grown man could outrun me. And running involves turning your back, making you helpless to defend yourself. In addition, its what a male bad guy expects when attacking a woman. Not an instantaneous lethal attack. Something like a crushing blow to larynx, for example, not the classic kick to crotch. Most guys are very good at defending their jewels . And that's expected by a guy attacking a woman. And even if a woman manages to land it, not every male is incapacitated by it.

The thinking faster in a SD emergency is very useful for deescalating situations. Once I ran toward a guy who was trying to rape a woman and scared him off by taking tiny steps but bringing my weight down as hard as I could. I sounded like a huge guy running fast, not a slender young woman running slow. Bad guy ran without even looking up. Yelling with my young female voice would not have been nearly as intimidating. On another occasion a raging would-be home invader, finding himself at gunpoint, started blubbering and saying "Go ahead and shoot me. I don't care if I die!" And raving about how his girl friend had just dumped him. The guy was clearly on PCP or something similar. Huge guy. So there I was, with a situation that had started as a home invasion turning into the much more intellectually demanding situation of try to gentle the guy down and get him to withdraw and not commit suicide by OB. The critical words were "I've already called the cops. They'll be here any moment. If I were you, I'd want to get out of here before they get here." His whole face changed. As if he was suddenly sober. He might have been somewhat attracted to the romantic idea of being shot and killed and maybe his girlfriend being sorry. But there was apparently nothing romantic or attractive about getting arrested. He ran. And I went ahead and called the cops, which there had certainly been no time to do before.

Yeah, I kinda have the opposite problem. I scare people just standing there. I am pretty good natured, but very gruff looking and rather large. I have to be cognizant of how I present myself in general public, and especially around sensitive places like schools and more traditional women's spaces. I have had calls on me on more than one occasion just from standing around waiting for my kid or something. I can't say I blame them, big guys who are scanning everything that moves get my attention too. No officer, I am not loitering, I am just waiting for my kid to get done. He is right over there.

Just this Holloween I was taking my kid out for candy and one of the other kids comes up to me and says "You look like an old timey sheriff!". Gee thanks kid, I wear this every day.

Of course for the ladies who do know me, they want me around all the time. My wife used to run a "loaner program" for our single friends whenever they wanted to go into the city or someplace less comfortable for them. "He can scare anyone off, plus you can use him for a pack-mule."

Yeah. My dad was 6'6", and had similar problems when he wasn't in uniform. He would cross to the other side of the street at night to avoid scaring a woman by appearing to be following and catching up with her, when actually he just happened to be going in the same direction.
I think women who had tall fathers have less of a problem with fearing men just because they are big. Given that human males can have guns, its not like average or shorter than average men can be assumed to be helpless or harmless. What makes men or women dangerous is primarily their intention.

Yeah, but lizard brain is hard to get over. Looks is a really quick shorthand for intention, even if it can be horribly inaccurate. This is why men face issue when dealing with primary child care, why some races face discrimination when it is culture that is the problem, and why some people can get away with murder just because they look innocent. Most people are never put into situations where these lizard brain assumptions are challenged, so the perceptions just keep getting reinforced and the actual root reason is never pondered over. Humans are extremely clever, cleaver enough to find shortcuts in thought processes, and clever enough that those shortcuts are often good enough that most are unaware they are even a shortcut at all.

Right. The generalization that big predators are usually more dangerous to us than small ones is basically correct. More humans get killed by bears than by minks, even though minks have a much worse attitude. But poisonous snakes are an exception. Yet we seem to have built in instincts that cover the snake exception too. Humans tend to be afraid of snakes, big or little. Whether that fear was instinctive or just very easily learned wasn't settled the last I read anything about it. Most snakes aren't poisonous, but its safer to avoid all of them until you learn the details than to do the opposite. Chimps will throw rocks at snakes and try to hit them with sticks.
