As someone who is 16 and wishes to buy a gun at 18 but the current idea is to raise the age to 21, I think it would be a good idea to let them raise the age, but when you turn 17 you can start a program where you can take a certain number of classes on firearm handling, safety, etc. and have 6 +/- range days with an instructor to display the knowledge. If you complete the course then you get a mental health test and if you pass that you get a license which would allow you to purchase firearms as they currently are 18LG/21HG. Then you have to renew the card as long as you are below 21 and own firearms every year by having a single range day to check retention and a mental health test. That way it would keep young potential shooters from getting guns but would allow somebody like me who wishes to purchase a gun at 18. Irresponsible people don't get the card, responsible people do. Just an idea though.

Sets a precedent that I do not like at all.

If they are going to raise the purchase age to 21, then do not allow anyone into the military under the age of 21 either. I am serious about that. I did not enlist until I was 22 and most of those I met while enlisted had enlisted at 17 or 18 and were not mature enough even afterwards to make that kind of decision IMO. There is a big difference between someone right out of high school and someone who has had to be on their own for 4 or more years. I left home at 17, got married at 19, had a child to support at 20, and there was a world of difference between my maturity level at 18 and when I was 21.

If we are to assume that a person 18-20 should NOT be trusted to make good decisions....hey wait a minuet.......

Girls (and guys) can star in porn movies at 18. So maybe, the industry should also raise that age too? LOL......yeah, another example of "kids" doing stupid stuff. Who cares that some of them have made a ton of money with their "talent." Then....the movies that they made have to/should be confiscated and possession punishable by __x__ years in prison. Plus, anyone convicted of possession with one of those moves, needs to register as a sex offender.

Empowered or exploited women (or men)? LOL. Shades of Traci Lords.

Could be an individual case but maybe nowadays it is a general condition of our youth. IDK. I have heard that maturity comes later today.

BTW, I enlisted at the age of 23. Was just not ready before that. But I married a gal that had two kids and that was during the 1974 recession. No income. A neighbor was USCG Aircrew... seemed like a good fit for me.

As someone who works in mental health, if you think there is a mental health test that could objectively help, you are sorely mistaken. The greatest predictor of future violence is past violence.

Are 18-year-olds adults or not? If not, then we need to raise the age to the agreed age - 21? 22? What have you? If you are a legal adult, then you can enter into binding contracts, serve (and die) in the military (as many others have noted), you are independent from your parents, you can be charged with crimes as an adult. If all this applies, you should be able to buy a damn gun, period. And I don't care if it's a rifle, pistol or shotgun. Same for booze and cigarettes - no reason for that to be 21 if you're an adult at 18.

But, if we want to treat them as adults and not give them the full flavor of adulthood, the good and the bad, then we need to cut them off of everything - military service, voting, contracts, etc. At least be consistent.

It seems pretty darn simple to me, which is why I can never be a politician.

Id rather have my left one cut off with blow torch then give an inch on my rights.

Remember WW2 Death Camps, take of your clothes and valuables they said it just a shower they said. howd that work out ?.. same same.... I have no problem talking with antis if they do what I say only had it happen once and that was only cause they are too stupid to know what they were doing.

Compromise means two parties come to the negotiation-table with something to offer each other to exchange for a service, goods, and/or currency.

In the gun control debate:

Party-A- has all their enumerated Constituional rights.

Party-B- has nothing to offer but their desire to exert control over the other side, disguised under any number of schemes.

Where's the "compromise"? o_O

In the integrity and values of party B. And in their brains, and maybe their parents. Mom said no, dad wanted it all, mom said just the tip, dad said uuuung mom said pullout, 9 mos later another antigun liberal was born...

What they need to do is stop laying more and more bubbleguming laws on law abiding citizens and do something about the bubbleguming criminals.
