Not so much a fear of Communism per se, but a VERY deep-seated fear of the SIX million men walking the streets, fully trained in the use of firearms after the end of WW1, and many of whom were bereft of employment and on the streets of the 'nation fit for heroes' that never happened.
And please, I beg you, stop saying 'England', when you mean the United Kingdom, of which England is but one fourth.
The last major upheaval in gun stuff was in 1997/8 when cartridge-firing handguns in England, Scotland and Wales were made into prohibited weapons, rather than prohibited FIREARMS - there is a substantial difference. True, there are still a number in private hands, owned under the most ridiculous strictures possible, which I'll explain if I have to, but as of now, only Northern Ireland has legislation in place that allows and ordinary Joe like me to own any kind of a regular handgun, in spite of Northern Ireland
recent bloody history. I gone into all this many times before, so I won't be repeating myself.
And by the way, before anybody trots out the 1689 Bill of Rights and the RIGHT to own a firearm, note that all it mentioned was that Protestant men should arm themselves against the wiles of Popery.
