Not so much a fear of Communism per se, but a VERY deep-seated fear of the SIX million men walking the streets, fully trained in the use of firearms after the end of WW1, and many of whom were bereft of employment and on the streets of the 'nation fit for heroes' that never happened.

And please, I beg you, stop saying 'England', when you mean the United Kingdom, of which England is but one fourth.

The last major upheaval in gun stuff was in 1997/8 when cartridge-firing handguns in England, Scotland and Wales were made into prohibited weapons, rather than prohibited FIREARMS - there is a substantial difference. True, there are still a number in private hands, owned under the most ridiculous strictures possible, which I'll explain if I have to, but as of now, only Northern Ireland has legislation in place that allows and ordinary Joe like me to own any kind of a regular handgun, in spite of Northern Ireland
recent bloody history. I gone into all this many times before, so I won't be repeating myself.

And by the way, before anybody trots out the 1689 Bill of Rights and the RIGHT to own a firearm, note that all it mentioned was that Protestant men should arm themselves against the wiles of Popery.

Ahem, there ARE people who collect guns purely for the fun of collecting them. For the most part they live in counties where the Chief Constable has a more enlightened view regarding how many guns a person may own, unlike my own county where every effort seems to be made to reduce the number of guns legally possessed by people who have been subjected to the national standards of security.

After all, the Firearms Act DOES categorically state that 'the Chief Constable SHALL issue....a firearms certicate', not 'might' at 'his or her own discretion do so'. However, the CC also takes into account the perceived 'local threat' and all that stuff, an makes up a few 'necessary provisions' of his or her own, like mine did back in 2005.

It would seem that the county in which I live, a mostly rural agricultural bread-basket in Eastern England, with one city comprising mostly universities and a world-renowned centre of scientific excellence- the Cavendish Laboratories [DNA, that kind of stuff] and one city with a most impressive 1000-year-old cathedral, are in reality hotbeds of seethment and fomentating peasants, myself included, natch.

Anyhow, there are a number of fellow shooters in my club, which straddles two county borders [almost], who have what YOU would accept as a reasonable collection of guns - forty or fifty or so, maybe more. They are usually members of the Historical Breech-loading Small Arms Association [look up HBSA] or Vintage Arms Association [VAA] or both.

A British tourist visiting Yellowstone noticed an American open carrying and posted the following on Twitter:

"Bellend" is British slang for the head of the male organ.

Kevin Hughes' Flickr account states he is a retired police officer, but apparently he doesn't know the difference between a pistol and a revolver (unfortunately neither do some American gun owners, but I digress).

Hughes' tweet ignited a firestorm of critical comments from Americans. If you are not familiar with Twitter, one thing you want to avoid is having a lot more comments than likes, since it is likely when there is a high ratio of comments to likes most of the comments are critical. The higher the "ratio" of comments to likes, the more likely it was a bad tweet.

Hughes' tweet was mocked by the NRA.

Hughes was so mortified by the response to his tweet he deleted not just the tweet but also his entire Twitter account, so you can't see all 16,000+ comments, but some are available

'oppressed countries'....oh, I like that.

Do you actually know what an 'oppressed country' looks like? An example? Try North Korea. Are you seriously comparing the yUK with North Korea?

Take a look, and THEN call the yUK 'oppressed'.

Half do, half don't

I'd recommend not taking it personal. The state of UK firearm rights, from a red blooded American perspective, is reprehensible. It's beyond acceptable and past the point that an armed revolt should have fixed that situation.

Hence, the term oppressed, from our perspective, seems entirely accurate.

And knife buy backs and bans, and lack of freedom of speech to the point that there is a police force that go after you for mean social media posts.

And putting reporters in jail for reporting on the rape of children if the defendant in the court happens to be muslim.

If this is how they rule ya, time to put on a yellow vest.

You guys really do make I laff sometimes with the Brit-knock. Do you lie awake at night thinking this stuff up?
We love you Tac (most of us), the rest are just ignorant Americans.

There are different kinds of oppression; you're speaking of the "hard" kind- old school dictatorship style. I would posit that much of the modern Western world (US included) is oppressive as well, just using a "soft" style.

This oppression includes: requiring licenses for absolutely everything, taxing absolutely everything, a surveillance state (this is huge- especially in your country), criminalizing behavior that has no negative effects on others, excessive incarceration (US has a higher % jailed than China), etc. A gilded cage is still a cage.

I saw one of those "caught on camera"-style shows in the late 1990's where a guy in England was suspected of shoplifting from a convenience store late at night. The cops watched him on CCTV until he was back at his apartment several blocks away and confronted him there. Dude was pissed, so he made this goofy giant insect costume and started walking around the street in it at midnight a few weeks later. Within ten minutes he was surrounded by cops. I can't really call a place that 1) has that kind of interlinked surveillance system and 2) has people monitoring it continuously "free." Lest you think I'm bashing your country, the US is hot on your heels.

The sad thing is that our own prosperity makes this possible. I've been to SE Asia, and while I'm sure the laws were worse on paper, and I certainly would prefer a US jail to one in Thailand or the Philippines, there was something refreshing about being in a place where the government didn't have the time or money to insinuate itself into every aspect of your life. So many of the things we take for granted: speed traps, seat belt enforcement, drinking ages, etc. either don't exist or aren't enforced because the government doesn't have the money to do it.

The folks in the UK are subjects, they don't have much say in their rights. Armed revolt would be the only solution to draft a bill of rights and constitution. The anti gun folks are abusing the Judicial Branch to enact unconstitutional legislation in USA. The difference is that gun legislation is a violation of Article VI within the US Constitution. The folks in the UK never had the right to begin with, they were given the privilege to bear arms for a period of time. I dare say us Americans (US) should be incredibly leary of regulation that establishes "privalege" and tax, because taxes are just as much of an infringement on our rights. Technically arms should never be taxed.

You missed out the steak - it's STEAK and kidney pie. Not that I would know, seeing as we don't eat offal-y well in our house. :D

You sir know of what you speak. Here's an authoritative summary of classis English Cuisine from Wikipedia, although they too seem to confuse English and British.

"Well-known traditional British dishes include full breakfast, fish and chips, the Christmas dinner,[3] the Sunday roast, steak and kidney pie, shepherd's pie, and bangers and mash."

'morning Tac, guess I missed all of these items except, of course "living in an oppresive regime"

Was this a reference to the UK? Or Oregon? Or Ontario?

I shall, with luck, be 79 next month. The USA in which I reside today is a heavily oppressive regime, compared to the USA into which I was born.

You younger Americans really have no idea what a 'free country" is like

Do stick around, Tac, anyone's gotta deal with such intelligent comments whenever he's on some gun web site. We do need your viewpoint & I think I can promise no one will be polite about it.

Gentlemen, with all our assorted faults, it was the English who invented actual Democracy. The European Union is NOT a Democratic organization. "Taxation without representation" is fundamental there. Europeans, in general, do what they are told. Amazingly so, from our viewpoint.

From the American standpoint the English have lost important freedoms, but I suspect the virulence of comments here is from the knowledge that we are right on their heels. And we'll be socialists on top of it all! It is, after all, really nasty (per Democats of a decade ago) to leave the means of production in private hands.

Now that we've had a little fun, let's remember we are all on the same side here. I apologize if I've hurt any feelings, but I didn't see it coming over an old joke directed at a third party.

TAC, I understand now that you are away and wanting to be back there. Sorry you feel stuck. I hope when you make it back it is what you remember and are hoping for. It appears to be a bit of a roller coaster over there these days.

First I'm a yellow-belly, then I'm an oppressed subject living in an oppressive regime, and now I'm a coward.

Gentlemen, I'm done with this thread.

Goodnight.

The difference between an A'Merican and those who are subjugated is predominantly in how thick our skin is. This is something that is mostly forgotten in this day and age. I'm hardtack aka Mainer. We have so many transplants from the flatlands that the thin skined culture is taking a foothold, next thing you know we will be a commonfilth like M'assachusetts. You are definitely a subject friend. You may choose not to be by thickening of the skin. I respect everyone's perspective but I respect my own far more, and that's the American way. The idea that individual freedoms and the right to choose a unique solution that works for the individual is part of that. No one is insulting you Sir, I can assure you, we are merely expressing our take on subjugation and statism. Mob Rule is something we strive to avoid here, and if you feel mobbed you are free to digress or tell us to shove it. We'll within the generous confines of the forum code of conduct. I assure you are respected far more than you know, and that you are welcome by the majority and that we feel for you brother. If what we say carves deep into your marrow, take action and let your government know how you feel. We are certainly in your corner brother.
