'Senate Republican Leader Herman Baertschiger Jr., R-Grants Pass, said in a statement. "...she is only representing Portland and the environmental community, not rural Oregonians."'

Whether we like it or not, she represents pdx, salem, eugene, and about half of southern oregon and half of Bend and half of the coast. Thats the vast majority of Oregonians, and the vast majority of them do care about the environment, and are willing to back their beliefs with their bank accounts, just as some are doing for the gop senators. Even if she were booted out, she would be replaced by the same thing running the same agenda.

The bottom line is, these gop senators represent a minority of oregonians, and minorities do not get their way in representative governments. Regardless of ideals or firepower, being on a losing side does not mean you get to obfuscate the legal processes, and should not be applauded for doing so. Either get more representation, get out, or accept majority rules.

ballot boxes are only one way of passing laws. I would like to see it on a ballot, but that is not my choice to make.

Part of being in the minority is losing the ability to control that.

Does HB2020 explicitly state taxation/exemption (carbon credit/pricing and allowance); and does it also say "An Emergency is hereby declared"?

Article IX, Section 1a Oregon Constitution; No poll or head tax shall be levied or collected in Oregon. The Legislative Assembly shall not declare an emergency in any act regulating taxation or exemption

Pretty clearly contradicts the bill.. and who is doing the obsfuscating by calling it "carbon pricing" in the text of the bill?

Rs do not have enough power in Salem to make laws, but they do have enough power to STOP bad laws from being passed by walking out and denying a quorum. I'm all for it. The Ds have done it before, now it is our turn, and they don't like it when we do it! Tough!

What can WE THE PEOPLE do to help out the Rs who are hiding out?

They are protecting us from the extreme leftist radicals. Write and thank them - ask what we can do.

using semantics to your advantage is not really obfuscating anything, especially when you know a judge will agree with you. Its a shrewd tactical political maneuver, htat anyone and everyone would use in a heartbeat to get their way.

One could also argue that if you don't like the will of the majority, tough. But I guess majorities, minorities, votes, and laws just don't really matter if you don't like them. I think thats a terrible way to run a state, and a terrible set of personal standards, but then again, I'm not in politics, and nor am I a preacher.

So you're fine with them violating the State Constitution to pass whatever taxation bills they want without putting it on voter/ballot initiatives??

The Rs are playing by the same rules as the Ds have done in the past. Sounds like you are upset that they outsmarted the Ds.

What else is it called when the State generate revenue under threat of violence or legal actions, if not taxation? It sure as heck aint "involuntary/mandatory donations"

like I said earlier its semantics. You might not like it, but using loopholes like using or avoiding specific language is a pretty standard tactic for any political party to use. Apparently, legally speaking, carbon pricing =/= taxation, even if it accomplishes the same goal, by the same means. Thats just how crooked our legal system is, regardless of who is in control. It just sucks to be in the minority.

I suddenly realized how Brown will slime this one through...
  • Let the legislative session expire and announce it's closed so the Senators return
  • As soon they are back, suddenly announce a special attention.
  • OSP is already at their homes waiting to handcuff them and take them into custody.
  • Democrats pass all the laws they want while the R11 are forced to stay for quorum.
  • Expect positively spun press stories telling us how brave and courageous Brown and the rest of the Salem Mafia are.
