At Shotshow this week we got a look at the CMMG Mk47 "Mutant."
Color me unimpressed.
There are lots of things I love about the AR and things I love about the AK. Personally I tend to be more impressed with the HK, FN and SIG entries into the "modern sporting rifle" field, but I own an AR, have shot a lot of AKs and really like both for different reasons.
So, here are some things I really like and really HATE about the AR AND the AK platforms.
AR Love: Open on empty bolt. -Slap in a new mag, hit the bolt release and shoot. What more could you ask for?
AR love: EASY and FAST mag changes without dismounting the rifle or worrying about the angle of the magazine when I insert it.
AR love: accurate (and depending on barrel length and bullet weight) effective out to 500 yards.
AR LOVE: It's so LIGHT!
AK love: Shoot it. Shoot it more. don't clean it, don't lube it. Drop it in the mud, kick it to the curb. Call it bad names. IT WORKS.
AK LOVE: Love me some 7.62x39. cheap, solid hitter and without question a man stopped not easily deflected by light obstacles.
AK Love: doesn't "poop where she eats." and the gas system as as simple and as infantryman proof as you could ask for.
AR HATE: STANAG magazines that don't fully seat.
AR HATE: Charging handle? O kill me now. WORST IDEA EVER and the part that always breaks FIRST. About as ergonomic as scratching your shoulder with your left small toe.
AR HATE: DI gas system. Great... every round you fire fouls the bolthead and every other part of the BCG. Works great like a cheap hooker. Dirty and wet. dirty and dry? Forget it. REALLY dirty? (like after 750 rounds or so) YMMV...not something I want my life depending on.
AR Hate: 5.56x45 55-grain bullets. If I wanted to kill coyotes, I'd have bought a bolt-action with a scope.
AK HATE: Magazine release and replacement mechanism. It's very particular and SLOW, slow, slow.
AK HATE: OOTB AK's are notoriously inaccurate past 200 yards. It's not the round, it's the gun, the loose tolerances and generally (outside of a high-end gun) crappy quality machining.
AK HATE: It's HEAVY. And so is the round. Carry that sucker and 200+ rounds in mags + a plate in a carrier, water and various accouterments for 10 miles and call me a liar.
AK HATE: Could those factory sight suck worse? I mean, if you were TRYING could you make them harder to zero (requires a tool) and makes your point of focus for initial target acquisition a PITA?
There are other love hates with both of these EXCELLENT rifles. Because in their way, they are both rock-solid, proven performers.
My point is that the CMMG misses a LOT of these issues and costs a bundle. ($2k or so). I can buy a tricked out SIG or a tricked out AR or AK for a LOT less than that.
What are YOUR love-hates with these two fine rifles? (Please be more specific than "commie guns stink.").
