45ACP aka boomer old school VS 10mm aka millennial hipster new.

Me?

22lr is the best, end of discussion, move along.
Naw. What's best is a club.

For self defense the best club is a pack of cub scouts. While bear, cougar, or bad guy chases loud screaming cub scouts you tiptoe quietly away.

I was born in the late 50's. I've had 45's. I remember my 1st shot with that Kimber. My son was middle teens and standing by my side. We were both surprised at actually seeing that 230 pill lumbering towards the target.

I did own a 10mm 1st (it was a Javalina, bought new). Years ago I sold all my 45's. It's 10mm all the way for me.

In fact, I recently got the OK from my CFO (wife) to add to my collection.

I bought a brand new DAN WESSON SPECIALIST 10MM.

Life is good! 😉
Im in my early 50s and both a 10mm and 1911 fan. I bought a 10mm Delta Elite in the 90s after facing off with a black bear hiking near Mt Hood.
I go back and forth between the 45 and 10mm cartridges. The 10 has the edge for bears but a 45 fmj or hardcast is hot on its tail.

Im jealous of your new Specialist, those Dan Wessons are really nice.

380 ACP. It has more digits, is a higher number than 357, and if 007 used it, it had to be supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. :D
Googling the numbers, the 11.43×23mm cartridge is almost 263 millimeters. :D

What has anyone here needed doing that the 45 ACP failed?

Bruce

I have owned a 10mm for about 20 years now, an older Glock M20. I bought it for when my buddies and I would backpack into the high country of Montana and Wyoming for some fly fishing. Over the years I have seen the 10 fall in and out of fashion, and at times brass (or factory loads) was hard to come by. By comparison, the 45 Auto remains steadily popular. Most 10mm pistols are a double stack configuration, so magazine capacity beats out the 1911, if that's your thing. Stopping power? If you're in a defensive situation, longer range isn't a factor. Likely close in, and the stopping power of the 45 is world renowned. My justification for having the 10? If a bear wants to punch my dance ticket in the high country, I want a high capacity magazine with some high impact rounds. I'm plenty happy a bear hasn't tested me out on this.

Capacity is an advantage. I tell people if you had to shoot a bear with a pistol your also probably gonna have a physical fight on your hands too, is the most common outcome I read about.
This is one of my favorite bookmarks to share on 10mm bear defense... The guy won, "bearly"...
the pics are hard to look at...

Maybe he would have faired better with fewer shoots of .44mag. :s0092:

That is the route I went back to

He would have fared better if he used the right 10mm ammo, not self defense hollowpoints. Plus, he intentionally downloaded his magazines based on the spring set myth.

That said, I wouldnt even want to shoot any bear with even a 44mag. Opinions vary on best caliber, the 10 has capacity and fast mag changes, the 44mag has much better power. If your a good shot and stay cool under the stress Id say the 44 mag is a better choice but how often do we practice with full house loads....
Here is a fun article comparing the two under stress... (admit I disagree with them using RMRs on the 10mms to compare speed...)

When in the "woods ", I take my SA XDm Elite compact. 15 rnd mag and some of Underwoods finest. Thankfully I've never had to test it.
My 1911's are for the range.

IMHO, 10mm is the perfect cartridge. An auto loader is better than a revolver when boo boo comes a callin.

Seems that the folks up in Alaska agree that a 10mm double stack semi auto is the better route.

I wouldn't expect any less from a 329, you'd be lucky if the first two shot didn't pull bullets and lock up the action.

I dont know much about revolvers. but I do know there are several 10mm options that all have a reliable and accurate reputation.
Even with a reliable quality revolver, a 44mag is not a fast followup those things kick hard.

The 329 is their LW Scandium version. Way too light for full power IMO. Heavier guns like a Ruger Redhawk and Super Redhawk handle the power better and absorb recoil better.

I believe that. Then that video is a really poor comparison. An alu lightweight 44 with full house loads against a 10mm with RMRs. Gosh, would never have predicted which would be faster to hits....
My dad used to have a huge stainless 44mag S&W. (I actually carried it bear hunting just one day)... that thing kicked hard.
