When talking security on the public internet, the key phrase is "zero knowledge provider".

PROTON Corp (located OCONUS) is a zero knowledge provider, they offer free and paid VPN and EMAIL services, cloud storage too (think secure data sharing).

A verified zero knowledge provider.

If you are looking that term up on wikipedia, you are already lost

I've been using Mullvad for a personal VPN and am happy with it.

I had a long conversation with a buddy. He suggested Mullvad over NordVPN. He pointed me to the Security stuff (ie., like a Nutrition label) for each VPN in the Apple app store. See below.

Net: Mullvad asks for nothing. You could even give them a prepaid CC. Just don't lose your account number.

Super easy setup on iPhone and iPad. Also works on Android and Windows.

On Mullvad, it is on all the time for my personal Mac laptop, iPad, and iPhone. Even when I am on home WiFi. I don't even notice the difference.

I'm not doing anything nefarious, but I'm tired of the invasive tracking and selling of one's personal information and activity. So I'll fight it as best I can.

If you want to try Mullvad on your iPad or iPhone, here is how easy it is...
  1. Go to https://mullvad.net and create an account. You do NOT need to provide any personal information. Write down the account number since there is no way to recover it later from the website. Pay for one month.
  2. On your iPad or iPhone, go the App Store and download the Mullvad app.
  3. Open the Mullvad app. Enter your account number. Mullvad will do everything else for you. You'll know it's working when you see a little VPN icon along the top of your iPad or iPhone. Go ahead and browse, use your apps, use your email.
Mullvad takes care of all the geek/configuration stuff for you. Use the same account number on your other personal devices. Add money to your account when needed to cover the monthly fee.

If you want to route your activity through a different Mullvad location, open the Mullvad app, click on the Gear icon, and select a new country.

If you need to temporarily disable Mullvad and the VPN, open the Mullvad app and click on the Disconnect button.

Purdy simple!

Kape technologies, who used to have another name that was running a bunch of spyware toolbars is buying up a bunch of VPN services. So be careful who you choose since VPN's are now one of the new ways to spy on your internet activities and sell the information.
