Dad's 44 magnum Colt revolver.
I don't remember it scaring me, but I definitely remember not asking if I could fire it a second time.

I was 6 or 7 and I don't quite know the exact model but I know it was a marlin. I believe it was a marlin model 60 22lr my brothers and I were shooting soup cans with my grandpa in the backyard of my grandparents farm during our summer break visit. My brother was supposed to inherit it but our dad was a violent felon and that side of the family is very distant, so I don't know what happened to all the guns after my grandparents passed.

Like this one that is a model 999

Bought a sportsman like you have pictured for my son, he wanted a break top pistol.
Yes that looks about right. I seem to recall one-piece grips, but it's been about 40 years since I've held that gun. The action broke, dad took it to a "gunsmith" who told him it would cost more to fix than it was worth. So dad filed down the firing pin on the hammer to make it inert, and it was a toy gun for me for 5 years thereafter. I traded it for a video game I really wanted, and we were both happy.

Maybe should be a different thread...but how about the gun you actually purchased...in a store?..

(cough)..for 22 year old me it was an Interarms Star 9mm

Traded it for a 3.23 posi complete rear axel assembly for my Firebird..good trade

Before I even started school so must have been 5, Dad started taking me. Had a pump .22 that became mine soon. First real memory were two hand guns. Dad had a S&W 53. The thing was so large and heavy that recoil was really nothing even to a little kid. Buddy of his brought along one of the Mil Surp 1911's that in those days you could still order. That was was a LOT for a little kid but, it started a life long love of the guns for me.

Dad's High-Standard Double Nine .22 revolver when I was like 8.. popped some cans with dad, not scared.
Same! I was 6 years old, and had to shoot it single action due to the stiff trigger. I also shot dad's Winchester model 150 .22 lever action. I still have them, as well as my grandfather's chromed High Standard 6" deluxe. Both revolvers are almost like new condition.

I wish I was one of those kids who got to own or shoot a .22 early in life. Sadly, I have a father who's a Nam vet with severe ptsd inducing experiences that informed his decision to disavow guns..of any type. His last weapon hurrah was with an M14..in '68.

So I was raised early on without guns. Had to venture into the world of firearms on my own.

First rifle I shot...
Great Granddad's muzzle loading rifle....sure wish I knew what became of it....

First modern rifle I shot...
A Remington 510 at Boy Scout Camp....I have a 1941 Remington 510 , enjoy shooting it too.

My first time shooting something other than a cap or BB gun was a bolt action single shot bolt action .22 rifle when I was 11 years old.

First 'rifle' I ever shot was an AR back in like '87. First shotgun was a Remington 870 in '85.

Actually...the AR is the ONLY rifle I've ever shot...EDIT..Ok..with the exception of the 10/22 Takedown I bought...but that's sort of like the Daisy BB gun I own..with a snap.

My first was a 6.5 jap, $15 off the used rack. At the local gun store. It didn't have a front sight so my dad cut a penny in quarters and soldered it to the barrel. Hunted with it that first year, I was 12, then traded it and $30 for a .30-40 Kragg.

I first shot an H&R 999 Sportsman revolver my dad had got in some trade. It seemed pretty cool at the time. Kinda like this, tho I recall a vent rib.

I considered buying one for nostalgia, but they don't look worth the effort. My dad had some nice shotguns and a good rifle, but never owned a pistol that was worth a tin nickel, until I gave him a GP100 and later a Glock 17.
Funny, I have a gp100 and a Glock 17....

Ah, a new topic!

My first purchase, I was nearly 12 and had been literally drooling for months over an old single shot bolt action 20 ga, that was just $25 at Krueger's Hardware Store. I really sweated that someone might grab it before I came up with the cash, but needn't have worried. The day I brought it home, Dad determined that shotgun was such a basket case that only a 12 year old would buy it.

So, my first purchase became a lesson for me, and this story is now about the first gun that I ever rebuilt.

With lots of advice & some help from Dad, I spent many months repairing and refinishing literally everything. We turned that gun into a thing of beauty with a gleaming hot-blued barrel and handcheckered stock that glowed from a rubbed LinSpeed finish. It was ready by opening day of small game season, and I was prouder to carry that gun in the woods than if it'd been a brand new European import.

Remington 700 BDL in .223 Rem. at age 12 (I believe). Recoil felt more like the rifle wanted to jump out of my hands. I thought it was interesting and not like I've seen in the movies.

First gun I ever bought at a store was a Mod 60, was not 18 so friend had to go with me to sign for it. Later bought a Ruger .357 there. To show what it was like in that day the owner let me take the paper work home to have a friend of mine who was over 21 fill out and I brought it back. Then had to get someone from the place I worked to go in with me to buy the first box of ammo for it. That sure as hell would not happen now days. :s0140:
