I have no idea what it was other than a rimfire .22 rifle when I was 10 years old. We had mandatory shooting practice at school during the Apartheid years in South Africa. I must have been in the 5th grade.

I was about 8 or 9 when a kid from the neighborhood sneaked a 22 rifle from his house to an old gravel pit near our house.
we shot a box if shells through it. didn't have anymore so we went to a hardware store and he shoplifted a box of shells(I was too chicken) so we could shoot some more.
we had guns at home but I was never allowed to handle them.
when I was 10 I got to shoot our Remington target master 22.
that gun had all the boys in the family's initials carved in the stock all 7 of us
my nephew in Wyoming has that gun now.
when I was about 11 my dad let me shoot a rock chuck with his savage 99 243, that was my first kill with a real rifle other than a BB gun. when I was 12 I could hunt by myself with the 22, that fall I got to go deer hunting but had to share a rifle with my older brother.
