I still think we would have better results in the election process if it was set up like jury duty - everyone who registers to vote are put in the pool for random selection to run for office. a computer RANDOMLY selects say 5 from each party and "decline to state" groups - anyone who doesn't meet some basic criteria will be removed from the pool and a replacement is randomly selected until we have a full ballot to choose from. Anyone who has a good enough excuse to get out of running for office is also excused from voting until they are available to run for office. I think that this would be an interesting experiment - we would probably get a much better group of people in office since they didn't want the job to begin with and would be more in touch with the real world. Also - all travel for purposes of the office will be general coach flights - no bypassing security or private planes - no exceptions. They should have to sit next to the same people we all get stuck next to on that flight we wish we never took... just a thought.

I think people are missing the point.. This isn't about our two party system..which I agree whole heartedly..is a bad joke.. It's not about Republicans vs Democrats..it's about Conservatives vs Liberals.. It's about values vs ideals.. Granted..the overwhelming majority of Dems are Liberals..but in no way are the majority of Republicans..Conservatives..

Sure..the "platforms" of the two parties are vastly different..but..in reality..most Republicans are RINO's (Republican In Name Only)..

So..rather than discuss this in a R vs D.manner..which takes us away from the actual subject..let's try to keep to the topic..

I don't see why that should be so difficult.. There are issues..and issues have opposing positions.. I for one have absolutely no difficulty deciding which side of any issue I support.. I've been called "closed minded" because I know exactly where I stand.. Not true.. I simply know the difference between right and wrong..so it's very easy to make those decisions.. I don't have to question my position..when those two options are so glaringly obvious..

That having been said..I don't hate someone..because they're a Liberal..I just can't embrace any of their agenda..

You can change human nature but not in a society that is as described. Today we have the people who are productive supporting way too many who produce nothing. Now that production jobs are gone those who live off the workers are going to have to find a trade. Socialist must have workers to steal from. When they give the jobs away there isn't enough to pay the bills.

Even if you divide us up human nature will allways bring us back to the you owe me mentality in our offspring. At least if you keep the same system.

Better to go back to the Constitution and leave behind all the socialism. It won't happen though, you are going to see changes you will believe in.

Threads like this do nothing but promotes an attitude that divides us as Americans. It poisons the well to the point that our politicians can't debate or govern. It does nothing but cause the political gridlock like we've had in the last few years.

You need both sides to represent the various views of ALL of us. Everyone needs an advocate and one party can't represent everyone's interests. It would ruin this country if business had all the power, just like it'd ruin this country if labor had all the power. Compromise is such a derogatory word on this forum but it's the closest we can get to fairness for everyone.

You guys take your hate of liberals to the extreme. Left Libertarianism is becoming more common and many of us are firearms enthusiasts. But we can't hang out on this forum without being called libtard or some other derogatory term. How many members has this site lost because of this vitriol and why is such disrespect allowed here? You don't have to subscribe to the "approved" list of values for either Republicans or Democrats, nor for what we call "Conservatives" or "Liberals". That approved list doesn't describe the positions held by a lot of people very well. I'm not sure what "left libertarianism" is supposed to mean either. But I know that there are people who are fiscally conservative who would be called Liberals on social issues. If one doesn't believe in the death penalty it does not mean that they are for abortion. Many of the conventional "Conservative" positions are inconsistent with each other. They deplore deficit spending, but they support the biggest contributor to that deficit spending, the $1T annual DoD budget. Many conventional "Liberal" positions are also inconsistent. They deplore the death penalty, but heartily approve of abortion on demand.

Those of us who rationally consider their social, fiscal, and political positions get very tired of the fight to keep from being lumped into one of these stereotypical categories with its attendant "approved" list of values. This "divorce agreement" tries yet again to do just that. I object to this both as a fiscal conservative and as a "Red Letter" Christian.

My own positions are varied, and will be criticized by both sides, each side attempting to push me into the other "benighted" camp. I believe, for instance, that we shouldn't spend money we don't have, both personally and as a nation. I also believe that we are obligated (if we claim to be Christians) to care for the sick, feed the hungry, and clothe the naked. I believe that almost all killing is to be avoided, with the exception of personal self defense and defense of helpless innocents. That would include the death penalty and almost all wars. I believe that firearms are tools; mere inanimate objects like axes or hammers, which can be used constructively or destructively by flawed human beings, and are not themselves inherently evil.

After 60+ years on the planet, I have discerned these things to be true and they stand like rocks in the tide, which flows this way and that depending on the hour. They are not moved by the battering waves of criticism or the popular "wisdom" of the moment. I firmly believe that as a people we are inherently good, but easily led astray by those who appeal to our jealousies and greed. I also believe that ultimately we will get it right:

Americans can always be counted on to do the right thing...after they have exhausted all other possibilities.
