I loved California as a kid before:
Jerry Brown
No more CC
Waiting periods
Crime increased ten fold in just ten years and is why I moved along time ago.
Schools suck
The tax every thing.
They triple tax items.
No free public access anywhere.

This.

I grew up in Pomona (Goddess of fruit, now the land of fruits and nuts).

Two of us from the same hamlet on the forum...who da thunk!

This is nothing new, used to happen all the time in San Francisco in the early '90s. Red light bandits or stop sign bandits is what we called them. In certain areas it is smarter to just not stop at red lights or stop signs. Also, if you turn down a street that has speed bumps every 10 ft for a few blocks, hit reverse and find another route because they will get you there too.

I remember that in SF, I also used to love that place. Why I didn't live there I was born there. My old hospital is now Condos, geees I feel old LOL. Wonder if anyone remembers playland near the beach, even had a shark tank they would lower you into. God life used to be so awesome to be a kid. Now we show kids safe spaces, and teach them everyone is a winner.

In my career field, I could be making more income in that area, but most assuredly, there is not enough money in the world to relocate to the Bay Area circa 2018.

I moved to La Grande in 1980, went to Brookings 1987 to 1993, back to La Grande, then Bend 2002 to 2006 til the Californians drove me nuts, then back to La Grande. I could have gotten 50% more income by moving to Portland but feel the same about that place.

Ah, the home of Mike Tyson!
Used to be a great place. 1952 til 1973, then to Huntington Beach, then into the USCG in 1975. Went to St. Joseph Elementary, Marshall JrH, Emerson JrH, then Pomona HS. What do you think of that place now? Blew my mind when I started seeing it on the show "Cops". 5th Ave along old Route 66... what a sh!thole!!!. I never went to any of my reunions, but there are a few people I'm still in touch with... We should trade some stories via PM... once had a place with a biker gang living across the back alley, wow!

Great read! Very prophetic about ANY place that caters to 'emigrants' thanks to the local politicians and developers. What happened to California is now happening to ALL the adjacent states and the states adjacent to them. Welcome emigrants, welcome criminal behavior! There are no 'safe' places, it is a myth perpetrated by those who want to enrich themselves at the expense of others. If a place (city, state etc.) uses the word 'Great.... or Friendly...' in their slogan, beware of the downhill slide!

You can go to home de(s)pot and pick up a one foot length of #3 rebar for around a buck or something like that. #3 is 3/8 diameter and very light but strong in a one foot length. Easy to keep on the dash, passenger seat, console, etc. It's easy to grab with texture rolled into it and will function nicely as a "hoodlum-be-cool-stick". Nothing to see here, just a piece of rebar...
I heart rebar.

I recall in the not-too-distant past in the Peoples" Republic of San Francisco a light rail train being overrun by a pack of feral subhumans like a train robbery in a western movie. Being where it was the Uentermenschen were able to do so unopposed. At least in WA and OR you can get a carry permit. For now, anyway.

I grew up in Pomona (Goddess of fruit, now the land of fruits and nuts). It was an agricultural town, then General Dynamics came in, then more and more subdivisions came in. Then Diamond Bar, which was outside of town and had a beautiful Country Club and golf course got overrun. Then the tract housing started touching each other all the way to the beach and from L.A. to San Diego.

Yes, it WAS a lovely area and we had a lot of state pride. Like many areas, kids ran wild and free. We played outside until dinner time. We had baseball, hide&seek, and Red Rover. Now there are drive-bys and other gang shootings. Nobody is safe even in their homes. I am ashamed to say that I am from there (40yrs ago).

I miss the hot sand beaches, hot girls, picnics at Cal Poly Pomona, or day trips to Mt. Baldy or Big Bear. Now I am fortunate to live in the mountains of NE Oregon, but every once in awhile I still need to breath salt air.

What was the state in the South (Alabama?) that made it legal to shoot carjackers? Sure put a stop to the problem there... they should try it!!!

Hah! I grew up in Hacienda Heights! Great little town (not a city), fantastic public schools and just a great place to grow up and be a kid. Been in Portland for 24 years now. And yes, it was a great state, the vast majority of my handguns were purchased there when I was a resident (none of which are legal to buy there anymore).

Loved Oregon when I moved here and it is slowly but surely turning into a nanny state. Probably won't retire here. Family is from Montana, seriously looking at moving there in a few years with a snowbird home in AZ.

Hey if you want salt air, it's just a short drive to Cannon Beach/Astoria :)

Just like you would use a gun to protect the Wife and family if absolutely needed.
You also need to protect the family and Wife financially.

What good is it to loose all you own and will ever make, over a $300 window?

I would not think gun If some bubblegum hat broke my window. I would think to throw his butt a beating.
And even that right there would cost me dearly!

So I guess you just cant own anything of value in the big city?

Exactly . redistribution of wealth

Ha, short drive for you maybe. When we go, we have to have a place to stay overnight! But yes, that's how I get my salt air today. Bought a few stunt kites... never short on wind at Oregon beaches. We used to rent a little house in Lincoln City during off season. Got more expensive as the years went by, but only $75 a night before they built the casino there.

That would sum up the progression of attacks and violence in Detroit for a decade before I left for Oregon. Part of the devolution involved a person (typically old woman) being doused in animal blood, acting injured and calling for help, hoping to elicit a good Samaritan response. We regularly practiced situational awareness, including not stopping for red lights if there was no cross traffic. Always moving, always looking, neighborhood watch citizen patrols every night - and it was a losing battle.

Downtown Portland used to have A group called the (guardian angels ?) .if I remember correct . That would patrol downtown skid row ect . and help people that were being victimized out..

In 2004 I rented a 2 bed room .in a 1950s built motel .ocean front for 35.00 around Florence and they allowed dogs. They charge more than that for a campsite now.

Score!!

We stayed near Garibaldi at the State Park in May... don't remember how much it cost. Not too bad I guess or we wouldna been there. Was during an extremely low tide phase and we got a bunch of different kinds of clams on the tidal flats in the bay. Rented a boat, some crab rings, and harvested a few crab too. Nice that they have cookers right there in Garibaldi to use! We were tenting and it started raining, so we packed up and went to Cannon Beach. This was in the 80s... really enjoyed the galleries and esp the glass blowing. Oh, and the big rock. :) Then went north to Astoria. Cool trip. No signs of public defecation. Went to beaches at and near Cabo San Lucas in the 90s and you couldn't walk nor swim because of the feces, sewer drainage, and garbage. The Westin hotel beach was ok, but don't go in the water there!

In San Fran in the 80s I seen some purse snatchers lurking on the sidewalks . They must have graduated.

Oh no! We were warned about the street tacos every time we went. Ate only at recommended restaurants. But there was one carneceria (sp?) that had open tables (cabana style) and a open bbq that was recommended. Also ate lots of prawns at patio restaurants. :D

"I remember reading where installing gas jets was a popular mod to stop car jacking in South Africa a few years back."

Made me think...
So I looked up "flame thrower."
Not regulated like guns. Not cheap (c.$3000) How comprehensive are local ordnances about Flammenwerfers? It makes a fetching mental image - carrying a flame thrower in your car. Maybe if you put a Sears sticker on it you could say it's a weedburner. :p
Throw in some yard tools and you're good to go.
Nothing says "GET BACK!!!" like napalm.

I was born in Concord and raised in Antioch, it has definitely changed from when I was a kid. It got really bad in the early 90s when everyone started moving there from Richmond and Oakland. My dad still lives there and my sister is in Oakley. I always tell my wife when we go down not to go out and about because it's so bad there. We typically go over the hill to Walnut creek to do anything.
