ANTIOCH (KRON) - Some would say when you think of car break-ins, the problem brings to mind San Francisco.

Now, Antioch is dealing with a recent rash of thefts--with a twist.

The victims are in their cars, either parked or stopped at an intersection.

Stopped at a red light, with no place to go, Antioch police are now warning of purse thefts happening while people are still inside their cars.

"These thieves are brazen enough to approach cars that are occupied...is very scary to the victims," Antioch police Lt. Tara Mendes said.

Lt. Mendes tells KRON4 in one case, while a driver was stopped at an intersection, the purse snatcher quickly ran up and smashed the car's window, taking bags right off the passenger seat. Then, the thief got away in a vehicle with no rear license plate or a paper plate.

Right and as they are running to the getaway car.....

Well, you can't shoot the thief in the back. Nor could you shoot a robber in the back. The police will probably never catch them. So really, is it perhaps the time to change the laws about the use of deadly force in the protection of property?

Some may out and out say, "NO".

I however, think of the old proverb about unforeseen circumstances.

For Want of a Nail

For want of a nail the shoe was lost.
For want of a shoe the horse was lost.
For want of a horse the rider was lost.
For want of a rider the message was lost.
For want of a message the battle was lost.
For want of a battle the kingdom was lost.
And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.

Keeping in mind, that someone might just be, one pay check away from total poverty. Stealing a purse, say with a person's rent check or, money to pay for life saving medical care or, life savings that you were about to take to the bank, etc...? Perhaps, it should be left as a "personal choice" to use deadly force in defense of property (when a felony theft occurs)?

Aloha, Mark

I used to live in Brentwood ( a few miles away from Antioch or it used to be)for a short while in my early 20's Antioch was this old farm, cow town then. We have family that lives in that area now, and has kids. They tell me its not safe to go for an evening walk there.
Gees, when I was there you could sneeze and drive thru the town it was that small. I loved the old movie houses, with balconies that was a hoot.

I loved California as a kid before:
Jerry Brown
No more CC
Waiting periods
Crime increased ten fold in just ten years and is why I moved along time ago.
Schools suck
The tax every thing.
They triple tax items.
No free public access anywhere.

I know many here, go California, go back.
Well I could care less what people think, and I worked there to stop the madness
and then came here and actually was able to stop some things.
I lived in a valley ( now they call it Silocone Valley) used to have orchards as far as you could see.
And farm land separated towns for miles. I do not miss what California is, I miss what it was, and
Oregon is only about 15 years behind the screw ups they did. And its catching up faster each year.

Sad what they have done to a state that where you once could go anywhere and do anything, has turned
into, your papers please police state.

I guess I see this in a different way. When I start driving the doors on my truck automatically lock. If these thugs are breaking windows I would take that as a threat to my life. If this happens then they are getting six to the chest and one to the head!

Humm, in my auto, doors locked, windows quarter or half down, [or ac hummin'] and someone approaches and steals my purse sitting in the seat or on the floor.

Could someone explains just how that occurred? How did the BG out of the blue know there was something to steal off the seat?

I know, the occupied vehicle's horn was broke, or

the addage of leaving a car's length at stops has been forgoten or not taught any more, or

the driver & passengers are putz'g on their cell or radio and lost complete sitational awareness around them!

Did notice the article didn't state how many have occurred and if this is new activity.

Yah, smash the window = just cause to fear for our lives. Pretty simple, IMO.

Honestly, not sure why that would be a question.

I grew up in Pomona (Goddess of fruit, now the land of fruits and nuts). It was an agricultural town, then General Dynamics came in, then more and more subdivisions came in. Then Diamond Bar, which was outside of town and had a beautiful Country Club and golf course got overrun. Then the tract housing started touching each other all the way to the beach and from L.A. to San Diego.

Yes, it WAS a lovely area and we had a lot of state pride. Like many areas, kids ran wild and free. We played outside until dinner time. We had baseball, hide&seek, and Red Rover. Now there are drive-bys and other gang shootings. Nobody is safe even in their homes. I am ashamed to say that I am from there (40yrs ago).

I miss the hot sand beaches, hot girls, picnics at Cal Poly Pomona, or day trips to Mt. Baldy or Big Bear. Now I am fortunate to live in the mountains of NE Oregon, but every once in awhile I still need to breath salt air.

What was the state in the South (Alabama?) that made it legal to shoot carjackers? Sure put a stop to the problem there... they should try it!!!

Just like you would use a gun to protect the Wife and family if absolutely needed.
You also need to protect the family and Wife financially.

What good is it to loose all you own and will ever make, over a $300 window?

I would not think gun If some bubblegum hat broke my window. I would think to throw his butt a beating.
And even that right there would cost me dearly!

So I guess you just cant own anything of value in the big city?

A lot of this wold depend on the circumstances. First off I don't go to the big city so this probably won't happen to me. I also leave space between me and the car in front of me. I try really hard not get stuck in the middle lane so that I can hit the shoulder and leave a situation if needed.

I will always try to avoid a situation first especially if by my self. Now with that said, if my wife and family is in my truck and some azz hat is swinging a steel bar or baseball bat at the window to break it. I totally would see that as a threat to me and my own and would do what is necessary to protect them if the need arises.

From the sounds of it, it happens so fast that there is no chance to react before the thief starts running away, and no chance to catch him to deliver a well-deserved beatdown. :(

there is a socialist answer...... become a victim just like the guy that doesnt want to work....that poor bugger needs to break your window for something to steal, sell then eat..... dont you know?

at what point did you decide it was only going to be theft and not bodily harm perpetrated upon your person in that split second the glass broke

defend yourself let 12 others decide! not the crook

PS
maybe better yet move from a demorat sanctuary state to a state that cares more about its citizens than they do the crims , after all the cops in portland watch antifa, im surprised they arent cheering them on:rolleyes:

It's behavior one might encounter in a third-world country. These "that could never happen here" events are happening more as we shift deeper into a two-tier society.

Be prepared.

The reality is this has been along time coming in California, by the time I left over 25 years ago, I had someone try and shoot me in a moving car, and had an attempted car jacking. Both times my own bad arse skills :D, got me outta of it.
But I also fear now for those that are not young and tough like I once was that live there. My wives aunt lives in Antioch, and has for about 40 years. She is now seventy and retired. These are people waiting to be victims, because of strict gun laws there.
They own a firearm, but because of laws they can't access them in an emergency. I don't care about the laws there, as has been said rather judged by 12 then buried by 6. But thats a choice ppl have to make. In a poll taken in 2016, the average time police take to get to your home is 8 minutes. ( yes it varies allot but that was the average) Now get in your car today and drive for 8 minutes and see how long that is ). In some areas as much as 20 minutes is the response time in some cities. Antioch is around 10 minutes well enough time to be a criminal and gone 15 miles away.

@DuneHopper the average response time in my area where I live is 25 minutes. I spoke to a Clark County sheriff that happened to be sitting in front of my house about 8 months ago. Its not a good thing and all those snow flakes that rely on those police officers are really going to be pissed when the SHTF and they need them and can't get there help because of how they voted. ;)

Problem solved.....
