Mom's a desk jockey at a firm I'll just call "Major Defense/Aerospace Contractor," it's just that with her ticker being overstressed to Overcarb Induced Lardbody to the point that she can barely walk from a handicap parking space to a store door... and that's not even getting into the delusions-of-self-importance that "she can't be bothered with little things like the bills because her work is SOOO IMPORTANT"--seriously, back in high school and college I used to have to back her into corners at dinner the night before her mortgage check needed to go out Next Day Air and tell her "you're not going anywhere until you sit down and write that check, unless you'd LIKE to not have a roof over your head any more..."

Fist-bump for Rucking Up and Doing What Ya Gotta Do For Family, @EPS.

A big issue with the 2nd Amendment is a "language barrier".
The language of the 1780's-1800's was far more formal than today's spoken or written word / language.
Just what did / does "Arms" mean when the 2nd Amendment was written?
How about the words "Regulated" or "Militia"?
These words must be understood in their 18th century meaning , before trying to see how the Amendment works for us today.

We need to understand the language of the time period in order to help understand the intent of document.
Many folks have looked at the 2nd Amendment with a 20th /21st century outlook and with our language and definitions of today....This can lead to a faulty understanding in my opinion.
In order to fully understand what was written and the intent behind each word , one needs to understand:
The language...
The world...
And thought process of the men who wrote the document , in the time period , in which it was written.
This needs to be done before seeing it in today's outlook , language or "worldview".

I do think that the Bill of Rights was written with the intent of being a "timeless" document.
"Timeless" as in always being relevant to any law abiding US citizen in any time period.
Unfortunately far too many people look at it in a limited light.

A good example of semantics then vs. now is the General Welfare Clause.

A lot of people today point to this as justification for "welfare" social programs, when that was not the intention at all.

It started off slow, but our laws and courts have gone well "off the reservation" with regards to what is allowed or not allowed by the Constitution, and not just with regards to the Second Amendment. We have slowly but surely slipped down that slope towards socialism - even Libertarian economists talked about allowing social programs, but minimally (taking money from one person and giving it to another solely for their benefit, is stepping over that line, and once you crossed it, you cannot go back).

The Second Amendment (and the fourth and others) has/have been chipped away in the name of what is "reasonable" and "best for society" and "necessary for law enforcement" and so on. So few courts/judges understand the history and intent - they understand the precedents, but they never go back to see if those precedents are flawed or not - they do not seem to have the courage and they are taught not to go against precedent.

Legislators? Worse. I would not even call them legislators - they are politicians, not leaders, not legislators except in name only. Politicians putting on a dog and pony show. A circus.
