This needs to be nationwide!

A Texas school district has it right. Employees are being trained and armed under a new program. Finding that for the cost of 1 SRO, 100 "guardians" can be properly trained to respond to active threats without excessive ongoing annual expenditure.

I have no doubt it's going to create a backlash among the anti-2A'er's, but IMHO, until we see active security and protections like this in place in our schools... heinous acts against our innocents will continue. I applaud them!!

The following signage is also being posted in school facilities and parking lots.

I guess the anti's already spoke out on Texas's new law.

Since Texas approved arming teachers and school staff in 2013, 514 school districts out of nearly 1,200 have armed school staff.
National Education Association President Becky Pringle cites arming teachers as a factor in the nationwide teacher shortage.
"When we add safety to the many things they are being asked to do for our students, it's an additional load and it absolutely impacts whether our teachers are willing to stay in the profession," said Pringle.

Isn't the left's mantra.... "If we can save just one child"? What happened to that?? ;)

Having school teachers in my family... the greatest factors for them questioning their profession is poor pay, being forced to teach things they don't personally agree with, unruly children with restrictions on how they may deal with them, too many students that don't speak English and/or have special needs. (Since "special needs" classes were abolished and in the mainstream classrooms now).

I'm curious about the Guardians' plan. Does anyone know yet what level of involvement would they have in an active shooter incident?

Active reaction force? I think the first problem might be lack of volunteers for that role, and the second would be the cost of effective training.

Basic room protection? An armed teacher behind every locked classroom door would be far better than a cache of rocks or hockey pucks. Adding a sign on the hallway side of the door might even be a deterrent:
"Armed Guardian inside; do you feel lucky?"

Could the OP parking lot signage be too much of a challenge or a dare? Since most mass shooters/school shooters are just opportunistic cowards (and usually not too bright), the sign should maybe point out a more attractive alternative:
"ATTENTION . . . YO
School Staff Here are Armed & Trained
------------------
Clinton Jr High (3 blocks north)

is still a gun-free zone"

No doubt. I was there Wednesday and Thursday for work. I believe it was 95 at 0800.
I grew up in Sacramento and it was hot in the summer months and we would go for more than 30 days of 100+ degree temperatures. But Sacramento was low humidity. I also lived in Chicago for over a year for a job and it was hot and humid in the summer months as well. I would wear a t-shirt for walking to work in Chicago and then towel off and put a dress shirt on when I got to my office. Texas it is very hot and humid as well in the summer time. I wouldn't mind moving to Texas since the company I work for has buildings in Texas, but I do not do well in heat and high humidity.

Sorry long post.

Some things to consider here :

Insurance....
If an armed school staff member engages and wounds the shooter or kills him outright...
A lawsuit or at least some sort of investigation will happen...something needs to be in place to cover the azz of the school staff who engage and takes care of the threat.

Trauma...
Chances are that the school shooter will be known to the staff or students..or may even be a student.
Now I understand that a life time of trauma counseling sure beats being dead...
However...you are asking a school staff member to shoot someone...someone they probably know...
Maybe they have had in class ..
And the shooting will probably be in front of other kids.

Defending the room...
I would suggest that if this policy of arming school staff is adopted that the school staff are trained and practiced in defending whatever room that they are in , in the event of a school shooter.
Building clearing is a fine art...one that I have done many times while in the Army...both in field exercises and when putting that training to the test when deployed on multiple combat tours.
It takes regular practice to remain good at it...which requires time , a place to train...and folks to train others....
All of which ain't easy to come by for school staff.
Also...there is risk of so-called "Friendly Fire" involved with building clearing...
Keeping armed staff in whatever room they are in , in a shooting event , may help keep this from happening.

Related to the above...
Responding law enforcement will arrive...with the mindset of a school shooter...
An armed adult could be seen as a threat.
Some means of identifying armed school staff needs to be in place and known to responding officers.
Also under the stress of the moment...armed school staff , may mistake law enforcement for the school shooter.

Training...
Training has been mentioned....who pays for it...what is covered in the cost ....
Related...could a staff member carry their own firearm....who covers the cost of ammo....
Related part 2 ....practicing the art of carrying a firearm is one that takes , well ...practice...and cultivating a certain mindset
As well as situational awareness....that can be talked about and 'trained" , so to speak...but can take much practice in order to become second nature.
Some folks are really good at this...others not so much.

All of the above is not to be read as Andy is against this idea of armed school staff.
Andy ain't ....after all I am the Dean at an elementary school...and have given this subject lots of thought.

The state of Florida commissioned a huge study after the parkland shooting. It was 450 pages and the #1 recommendation was to create the guardian program. Mark
Smith explains in detail in the video below

We are in a cold spell these days. It's been in the upper 90s.
It doesn't seem that bad but it's been a long time since I've had to work on a roof or in an attic!
