Expecting people to "read between the lines" never works for my. The direct approach has always resulted in less grief for me.
This is very true. It's also hard for some people to come right out and ask for money. I understand; I'm the same way. There have been times when I've expected someone to offer to chip in, and just not known what to say when they never did. Looking back, there have also been times in the past when I should have offered to chip in myself, but was too clueless to offer.
