Towards the bottom of the article <broken link removed> is a description of a 2002 wargame. Blue didn't do so well, probably because they were "fighting the last war". Iran also has HY-2 Silkworm missiles which could be a problem if launched en-masse, instead of the 2 at a time like they launched at the Big Mo. Hopefully, the Navy learned and adapted from the wargame.

edit: I did a little more research and thought this was the ultimate irony, the last US carrier sunk was in 1945 and called the USS Bismarck. Talk about a bad name for naval ships. Apparently we lost a whole lot more carriers than yorktown and hornet in WWII.
You mean The Bismark Sea (built in Vancouver, WA by the way) There were a bunch of Escort or "Jeep" carriers built. They could crank them out in those days. Jeep carriers could be built on an
unfinished merchant vessel hull

Carriers lost in WWII

a total of ten (10) aircraft carriers of all types were lost. Note the Navy's first aircraft carrier Langley was also lost but was considered a seaplane tender at the time being redesignated AV-3.

The Langley CV-1 aka AV-3
The Lexington CV-2
The Yorktown CV-5
The Wasp CV-7
The Hornet CV-8
The Princeton CVL-23
USS LISCOMB BAY CVE-56
USS BLOCK ISLAND CVE-21
USS GAMBIER BAY CVE-73
USS ST LO (CVE-63)
USS OMMANEY BAY (CVE-79)
USS BISMARK SEA (CVE-95)

These were just the big boys. Countless tin cans. greyhounds, transports and cargo ships were lost.

"Boys, it was hell of price to pay, but it has been one hell of ride." Some old salty chief at the end of the war.

The carriers in WWII had wooden flight decks, the brits on the othr hand had armor on theirs and lost no carriers to Kamikazes. Having served on a carrier for 3 years, you cannot imagine how big, fast and tough they are. An exocet missile would make a big bang and bounce off. You can also tell the Iranians were lieing about their photos of a carrier. The carrier had no plane guards out, no alert cap on the launchers and a few other things. They were in transit mode.

What happens if Iran gets one lucky shot and sinks a US Aircraftcarrier?

What would happen would be a significant military response likely in the form of cruise missile and aerial assault in addition to a global choking of what's left of Iran's economic support. It would also be the final "excuse" to shut down the two nuclear development sites in Iran (or at least to make an effort.)

That's more interesting to me - I'm curious what we have in our arsenal that's non-nuclear that could neutralize those sites.

Well lets see what would happen should a war start in Iran. First Obama has been downsizing the military so in order to get enough people a draft would take effect real quick. Guess who we will have to fight besides Iran?

That implies an invasion and ground war. If Iran were to strike and successfully sink a Navy ship, highly unlikely we'd put boots on the ground and invade. Bombs, bombs, bombs. Sanctions, sanctions, sanctions. Blockades, blockades, blockades. All things we can do now and in the future with reduced numbers of troops.

You have to be right on this, they never went into Iraq or Afganistan so I am sure they wouldn't go into Iran either...eeerrrr LOL

You're comparing the two? Really? Do you want to think on that one for a bit or do you really need help understanding the difference in scenario?

I understand the difference in what you hope will happen and what will happen. The guy in charge loves war and is involved in several right now.

I would hope that the US Navy remembers that even an outhouse of a county like Iran has the greatest advantage. Initiative, the ablity to strike within a limited area at a time of their choosing. Anyone who has served recently knows that this gives someone who is willing to die the ability to inflict damage far in excess of the immediate cost.

Even if only one Silkworm hits, they are not called carrier killers for nothing.

I know it's picky, but Submarines are not ships. They are "boats";)

Yes Sir, but I very well couldn't have said "There are only two types of boats...Submarines and Targets." Targets do not deserve to be called boats :) .

It could also be said that "There are only two types of sailors, Submariners and Skimmer Pukes", but I wouldn't want to offend any of the surface Navy veterans among us.
