I am not an expert, but I would consider cup thickness is the main differential. This can bee seen in virtually all of the primer specs. I have seen a video depicting the "flame" differential between primers, but not sure how accurate it really was.

That's the side I was leaning to. I have viewed the chart that showed the dimensions of primer cups too.
 
To the original topic. For what it's worth. I learned that a powder, HS-6, is kind of lack luster/dirty in .38sp, .45acp. But running in the smaller, higher pressure 9mm and .40 S&W it ran cleaner. with better case fill than the popular 231, Bullseye etc.
