Aug 2012 I smashed my right hand, I'm right handed, and had three wires sticking out of my hand for 6 weeks. I started shooting in Jan 13. I was well on my way to becoming left handed. I simply shot left handed only. I went to the range and rented several guns. As I was only using my left hand, caliber didn't matter. BTW I own two M&P 9mms which can easily be switched to left handed. As time went by, I still shot left handed but progressed to bracing with my right hand. I talked about this with my doctor. I now have most of my right hand usage back and shoot right handed. However, when shooting I still practice shooting right and left handed. The silver lining in this cloud is I feel very competent with either hand.

I am a mechanic also. Hang in there, it gets better.
