i think as a wood carver, he's actually allowed to carry whatever knife length folded or fixed he pleases as it was being actively being used as part of work.

it's obviously an under-thought out law. what about butchers? what about cooks? what about..........?

the only difference is gonna be the walking around town part. most people in a profession do not just wander around town butchering cows or preparing salads.

Is there any other video? Seems kinda strange there aren't 5 different angles from traffic, store front, roof tops etc. . How many angles are there from 9/11 on just one plane? If you're wearing your foil hat tighten yer chinstrap.:s0131::p
Just asking because i haven't seen any and wonder if anyone thought to ask.

From the time Officer Birk got out of his vehicle to the time Williams was shot was a matter of seconds. Even if someone walking down the street had a video recording device in their hand, by the time they would have realized something was going on and started recording it would have been over.

Perhaps police lapel cameras will become more common in the future. It would have been helpful in this case to see what kind of "threat" Williams was posing.

Police are authorized to use violence to resolve disputes. I.e., when a cop gives an order that isn't instantly obeyed, he can then justify any level of violence applied to resolve the situation.

For example, if asked someone to stop filming me in public, and they said to F off - it a public space with no expectation of privacy, and I then proceeded to take their property and beat the crap out of them until they stopped resisting, I would be jailed. Police can do and have done that, arrest the person for 'resisting arrest' and write up a report to justify their violence. Without video evidence of their actions, there is little chance anyone will look twice.

Nooooo...they most definitely cannot. When I was an LEO we spent a great deal of class time learning how quickly we could ruin our lives if we used inappropriate force.

<broken link removed>

It goes without saying that any police officer who shoots a fleeing person in the back will later claim they were reaching for a weapon, or add some other mitigating factor to their report to attempt to justify their actions.

Not even close:s0112::s0112::s0112::s0112: This case has nothing about an escaping felon. In this case the officer claims self defense or defense of another.... try again. :s0112::s0112::s0112::s0112:

FAIL:s0112::s0112::s0112: A person can be arrested and if they resist during the arrest, even if the arrest is not valid, the person can be found guilty of resisting arrest. You still aren't making any sense...

One thing is the draconiun laws in Seattle and surrounding areas. I mean I can remember when you could carry a knife, big, in a leather sheath and no one blinked an eye, now if a child in school draws a gun on a piece of paper he is in trouble. These same attitudes have rubbed off on law enforcement, look at the poor four policeman that didn't react fast enough when having thier morning coffee. The guy with the knife was clearly a nutcase, let us await more facts before we finalize our judgement. Spad

Ok, i'm sorry this has turned into a "Innocent civilian VS LEO" thread. Did the officer make mistakes or bad judgement? maybe? Was Mr woodcarver "an innocent civilian"? ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! He was a SCUMBAG!!! If i caught him standing there "innocently" within 50 feet of any of my kids (boy or girls) i would shoot him between the eyes. I dont give a F*** if it was his legal constitutional right to stand there. HOW MANY TIMES HAS HE BEEN ARRESTED? OVER 100!!! 30+ convictions!!! Come on you MORONS!!! Rape, lewd conduct, indecent exposure(multiple convictions) resisting arrest, assault.... WTF WTF WTF!!!!!

Somebody with a brain please answer this... Did he really have a constitutional right to carry a knife of any size? Or was he possibly on what would seem like a lifetime parole or probation? where he would not be allowed to carry ANY item that could be used as a weapon... I believe if this is the case he has forfeited many of his "constitutional rights".

The only time this guy wasnt being arrested was when there was no LEO around to see him showing off his D*** to whoever was around. STILL DEFENDING MR WOODCARVER???

The only injustice i see is the fact that a rookie cop is going to pay for someone that should have been locked up with the key thrown away.. OR BETTER YET, SHOT WITH HIS BODY DUMPED IN THE LANDFILL.
Why didnt any of you defending this piece of slime invite him in for dinner with your wife and kids??? Oh too bad he's dead now... but there are hundreds more like him.. Go down to your local bridge, invite one in... OHHHH you dont want to? OHHH if he was standing on your front doorstep "innocently" knocking on your door,,, WHAT?!! you would shoot him through the door...
THATS WHAT I F***** THOUGHT...

I was talking about traffic cams or ATM cams or weather cams on top of buildings or store security cams. I bet there is probably one of each within a block of the location where the shooting occured.:s0155:

You probably don't have any,but go to the neighbor kid and borrow a joint brother (bowl, blunt, whatever)

And why didn't you post this at the beginning of the thread?

BTW If this is what the guy is like,he was asking for it.If he has over 100 arrests,he knows to drop everything when the cops come to you.If you have a knife, then drop it or put it away, right?
If you're a POS,and the cops know you,you know the routine.

So the shooter LEO will need to get someone to look at the guy's record,so he can get a job elsewhere.

The officer did what he was trained. Why did he stop him? The guy was walking down the street with a knife.

You wrote "AS recounted by said officer
said officer says "hey drop the knife" a few times
as recounted by the officer "he would not drop it
he turned around and it was open" BANG X5 times"

He was told a FEW times to drop the knife, he did not comply. Training kicks in, what is the officers learned response to a subject not willing to comply holding a knife? To hit the bad guy get off me button repeatedly.

It seems pretty simple COMPLY with the officers commands or reap the consequences.

I often clean my fingernails with my 3.5" Buck #110 in public. Didn't know it was a capital offense. They even let me into the Rose Garden carrying it. You sound like a frustrated wannabe cop fanboy. We have a 4th amendment in the US that says the police can't stop people "as they see fit". The dude was minding his own business and doing nothing threatening or illegal. Now he's dead. If what happened here follows the guidelines laid out in police training today then there's something deeply wrong with our training methods and philosophy. I believe that's the case.

First time i've even seen this thread, thats why i didnt post earlier...

Really Zigzag???
first of all, if mr dropmypantsinpublic was on parole or probation,(which sounds highly likely) he has NO 4th amendment rights.... and before you give your "opinion" on whether he does or not, why dont you look up the supreme court ruling on the matter.
And as far as cleaning your fingernails with your knife, did you also spend the last 25 years assaulting, raping, resisting arrest, and dropping your pants in public too?

And if you did I would hope they threw you in prison and threw away the key. I would definitley be one of the people calling for them to do just that.

Your post is a disgrace to this forum and you should NOT be in possession of a firearm.

Completely agree. This thread has brought out the worst of the membership on this otherwise fine forum.

Hmmmmm, maybe a chill pill would be advised...............:s0001:

Well good, now that i have your attention and you arent trying to defend Mr Williams or his "rights" which he would have had almost none of, we can get to a couple issues.

First of all i wouldnt "shoot him for just standing there". dont take everything i say so literal. It was said to bring attention to the fact that Mr Williams doesnt appear by his arrest and conviction record to have ever done anything "innocently". You dont get arrested 100+ times by being an "innocent civilian".

Also you guys on her surprisingly seem to have a 1st grade education when it comes to rights. There are very few "inalienable rights", the rest of them you can alienate very quickly by commiting various felonious or even misdemeanor crimes. Once a person commits those crimes, they no longer have rights like law abiding citizens. So quit trying to compare yourself to a criminal unless you are one. (BTW he was released from prison 2 weeks earlier for Felony indecent exposure)

As far as shooting someone through a doorway, i'm surprised no one bit on that statement. How many of you who have taken concealed carry permit classes, were told by your instructor that it is legal (in oregon, but NOT California) to shoot someone THROUGH A DOORWAY if they are attempting to enter your house unlawfully?

Yes i watched the dashboard clip with the sound intentionally turned off first. I knew the shooting was not on the tape so i wanted to see the body language of the Officer as he walked across the screen. I didnt see a cop walking with any intent to shoot anyone, as a matter of fact IMO, other than his hand on his gun which ALL cops do in ANY instance where they are approaching ANYONE, the officer appeared to be completely at ease as he approached mr Williams. It appeared to me that he was not expecting anything to happen and was caught off guard possibly by a non threatening gesture that he misread as threatening.

Just because the (career criminal) died doesnt make him an instant saint.
