Boy oh boy the sage rate thread turned into scary law talk real quick How bout this fellas, who cares who's breaking a rule here and there anyway? We're all out there having fun!!!
Back to the point....
I myself don't have to worry about all that though, my grandfather lives on 40 acres outside of Prineville. Also his rear property line backs up to hundreds of BLM acres going all the way to the reservoir. I was out there a couple weeks ago and it was damn cold. I didn't see a single sage rat, zip, most of their "hot spots" looked pretty unused as well. I didn't even spot any cottontails. Still have a couple months I'd say before they get real active in eastern Oregon.
But when things really pick up we like to roll around on the 4wheelers, 12/18g on the rack, if you roll around in little patterns fairly slow they will start popping up to check you out. They almost never look while your walking of course. But that motor brings em out, so when I spot one in range I just kick it in N, stand up and take the shot. Works Great!! Now cotton tails on the other hand you have to get crafty. Sometimes when we're shooting sage rats the neighbors two beagles make their way over, cuz they know it's rabbit hunting time soon. They are a big help out there in the sage brush.
Good Times in the Desert!
