I guess it depends on how far back you want to go. If you are going to go by who owned it first, you could say it belongs to the Greeks. Or the Italians. After that it belonged to the Turks. The Russians took it in 1774. But it has never been Ukrainian until relatively recently, when Krushchev adjusted the boundaries of various republics within the USSR and gave it to the Ukranian SSR (1954). The Ukrainian claim on that territory is rather weak. So, determining who had it "first", like all teritorial disputes, is subject to interpretation.

Except its not full of Greeks or turks or italians. Crimea is 65% full of ethnic Russians and about 15% Ukrainians. If you go by the language spoken at home in Crimea its skewed even more heavily towards Russian. The Ukrainian claim on Crimea was always weak.

It's really the Tatars with the historic claim.

One good thing about Putin having Crimea, is that he can't sneak anything out of the Black Sea without us knowing about it.
That is unless he takes Turkey and that would create quite the dust up.
Can't blame Putie for not liking being boxed in, but because he's not trusted, that's the way it's going to be.

It's about time to visit Putie for a New Year's victory lap in his not-so-private lake...

That would be akin to England taking back Ceylon
Ukraine is now an independent, sovereign state.
Crimea wasn't Putin's or Russia's to take back.
Ceylon isnt next to England and twas never part of England and isnt populated by an overwhelming majority of English.. Crimea should never have ceded to Ukraine in the first place. This is just an adjustment to the breakup of the Soviet Union.

And the Native Americans want the Western Hemisphere back.
Once the natives outnumber the invaders by 9:1 Im sure they can ask the neighboring country they used to be a part of as part of a larger country that is also 100% native Americans to intercede in their behalf. That is the situation in Crimea.

Americans just do not understand what a powerful force ethnicity is in Europe..

Ukraine was part of 2 empires that:
A. No longer exist i.e. Imperial Russia and the USSR.
and
B. Treated the Ukrainians like dirt when they did exist.
Your argument that Crimea shouldn't have ceded to the Ukraine as the reason Russia invaded is spurious. It WAS ceded to Ukraine. The deal was done. Russia has no right to those regions and they knew it which is why they took Crimea by force, because there were no legal means for them to get it back. Putin is doing and has done, what Hitler did to the Sudetenland . Taking lands by force from a sovereign nation under the pretext of protecting people of Russian ethnicity. There are, no doubt, Russian people living in Poland and Poland was part of the Soviet Union and they share a border. Does that give Putin the right to invade them too?

Putin's actions are not an adjustment to the breakup of the Soviet Union. This is Putin's attempt to rebuild the Soviet Union.

Its not spurious at all. Crimea was placed under the administration of the Ukrainian oblast before the breakup of the Soviet Union for the sake of efficiency . It never was "part of Ukraine" . It has a vast majority of ethnic Ruissians and Russian speakers. This is just an adjustment.

If there isn't oil, minerals or a deep water port involved, these "adjustments" are often not necessary.
