After seeing a project on another forum I decided to give it a shot

This is a standard Ruger 10/22 made to look like an old Spencer/Sharps/Springfield Trapdoor carbine

Cool project. I looked over your blog post, looks like some work went into that. Interesting about your issues with the birch stock - I refinished an old Marlin Model 60 with a birch stock a couple of years ago. I was fortunate that the stain took to the wood fairly evenly, but there were a few spots that got a bit darker than others, just not so much to make it obvious.

Nice work.
