the problem with this is how do you put a limit on who is allowed to protect themselves?

Self defense is a civil right for all. Keep in mind that it isn't just the idea of protecting helpless children, the teachers lives are at risk and under direct attack in a school shooting just as much as the children.

Working 4 U already touched on this, but I will state it unambiguously. Self defense is a Natural Right granted by your Creator. Civil rights are a construct of man and as such can be changed whereas Natural Rights cannot be changed. You may be denied the exercise or your Natural Rights by means of force or coercion, but they are still your Rights.
