The black powder cartridge shooters use that stance with 45-70s (or 45-90). Recoil is less of an issue than when shooting prone.
That stance was standard for small bore 50 foot competition when I was doing it. It cannot be beaten with any other offhand stance that I know of in a 50 foot small bore match. There the 10 ring is .25", about the same size as a .22 caliber bullet. If you can't shoot an 80+ at 50 feet with 10 shots standing you better go home. If you want to win you'd better be in the 90's for 10 shots standing. A lot of people will shoot 100 from prone, and 98-99 sitting and kneeling, so the big differentiator is offhand. Small bore competition shooters will go to any lengths to win, including goofy looking, but stable stances.
