Why not just have a deadbolt on each door. That way teacher/adult in the room could just simply turn the know and lock door inside the classroom?

And then person on outside would need a key to enter?!? No key needed for people inside the room.

Against fire code? Or some other reason?
I can't cite the actual code, but it has to do with emergency egress.
A thumb turn can be tampered with and humans in a panic have been known to pile up on a locked door while trying to escape.

A Fire Marshal made me take one out one time and a Building Inspector could as well.

You can have a double cylinder (keyed) deadbolt but you also have to have
"This Door to Remain Unlocked During Business Hours" signage on the door frame.
With a keyed deadbolt, the onus is on the person is charge of the building to see to it that doors like these are all unlocked at the start of business.
