Currently trying to convince the wife that this is a great idea :(

Hadn't planned on anything else until next year but this seems somewhat timely unfortunately :(
If you don't buy local, by the time that you get your CMP paperwork in, and with the wait, you're looking at six months or so to convince the wife that it's a good idea :)

Personally, I told the wife before we got married that there would be a new gun each year.

Prices of M-1s have been going up. I predict when the CMP supply dries up prices will jump.
When you order a CMP rifle they will not charge your credit card until it ships. Now remind your
wife you do not "spend" money on a gun You "invest".:)

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm not seeing any pics though!!! Get them up :)

I'd like to think a service grade will get me an example you guys have given, but it's all luck of the draw now and the specs/margins for a service grade is from great to +5

There is a "notes" section when purchasing and you can request a "good shooter". There are no guarantees but that's what was suggested to me when purchasing and I ended up with a 0+, so there's that. ;)

Dick at D & D Sports has three and the price was $950 each. Those who want one you need to call up and set an appointment. They are in a vault and he has to travel to get them to show. Conversation me for his number if you are a serious buyer and not just a tire kicker.

I absolutely consider these an investment. There is a finite supply, and I suspect they are on the tail end. The price has already increased by more than 10% through the CMP in the last year.

kibs45 You have some nice rifles. I have looked at the service grade rifles that are at different
matches and I see some really nice Garands. Check out the picture thread at the CMP forum.
Now over 100 pages of 'Man Porn'. http://forums.thecmp.org/showthread.php?t=259
Now these rifles are not just pretty but fun to shoot. Check out this thread.

Yeah, I did a 100 yard and a cross course match with loaner rifles, I have been meaning to site one of these on and get back into it. But alas, I suck at sighting in rifles... One of those rifles has a ton of history it is WWII production (June 44) and is heel stamped SA-52, and then over that is a O-66 electro pencil mark. It is also the one with 1+/1+. I know as a service grade it is what it is, but to me, that rifle oozes history.

There will still be rifles available next year. The problem that you are facing is that with the supply drying up, prices can only get worse.

The only really big problem that buyers will face will be if the Democrats get a landslide win in the 2016, and Hillary is elected. If that happens, I would not put it past her to even include M1 Garands in a new gun ban.

.

Alright, whilst not ready to get another gun this year (don't worry, wife got the last gun this year already ;) ) i'm feeling the same as many posters here, that even if they are available later, the prices are going to be crazy.

So, at great cost and commitment, i've had the green light :D

I have a couple on offer to me locally, i have to consider more matching parts and very nice new stock Vs slightly less condition and original stock.

Also, i'm assuming that that adjustable gas port will let me use the same loads the wife is running in her modern 30.06? Otherwise, i have to assume it's fairly easy to load to M1 specs when i'm reloading?

Yes to both, just make sure to ease into the proper adjustment on the gas plug. There is also new manufacture of M1 specific ammo. You can still get surplus M1 ammo.

I'm hoping there is a procedure to follow on the adjustment, is surplus cheap?

Just reviewing this thread again, i noted that this isn't really an option from CMP anymore, things have moved to 'luck of the draw' now, i'm going to attempt local i think.

Also, anyone who hasn't gotten the gas port vent thingy to allow modern ammo, check this out, it's not a vent, it's ported plug, no adjustment :)

Here's the Schuster for $28 for those interested

Hmm, the high volume one is a lot cheaper than the garandgear version, no idea if the volumes are the same, but i would imagine it's just a straight copy. Hmm, $7 shipping though :/

The one you are looking at changes the volume of the gas system reducing pressure.
I use one of these plugs that has different size vent holes.

They do offer the 'Service Grade' for $730. Luck of the draw is for manufacture
type. H&R or a Springer. The service grade rifles I have seen are well worth
the money. Any issues with a CMP rifle they will make it good. I have seen
some nice rifles for sale locally but you have to know what you are looking at.
I have seen several rifles for sale from $800 to $1000. They are 'Rack Grade'
with well worn parts. I would not recommend them for a shooter.

As things stand at the moment, I need to get one locally as I would like to buy it and not my wife (not a citizen) I'm getting one that's at or better than the cmp special I hope.

I think (after reading up on it) that the ported plug is a better solution than the vented one.

In practice the ported one is better, because it doesn't need to be adjusted. Unfortunately I don't have real experience with either so I can't help much. Surplus ammo from CMP is very fair, I think it was 130-140 dollars shipped a loose can which usually works out to just over 200 rounds.
