That has not been my experience with Benchmade, I had the springs replaced under warrranty on a Mini-Barrage last fall and it was sent direct to my house by USPS. I do believe you would be correct with an auto knife though.
I called them and verified it as well as it being on their website.

You don't have to wait for the factory sale for the repair shop to adjust your knife - they have a service counter open during business hours. Last time I was in the area I dropped by and they took it in back, cleaned it up, sharpened it, and adjusted it so it ran better than new - all done in under 10 min., or as others said, you can send it in to the repair shop.
