Are there any places that conduct IDPA matches but are meant for people new to it and/or not "that" competitive and more set up for learning and/or fun? Within an hour of the Gladstone/Oregon City area would be ideal. thanks! I did some like this in Colorado and really enjoyed it.

It's only competitive if you make it competitive, like the guys who bring pseudo uspsa gear to what's ostensibly an EDC match.

What's an edc carry match? Do guys draw from concealment? That seems very worthwhile as you are forcing yourself to improve your practical skills.

I used to shoot a Pocket gun match a couple times a year. it's based on a 5 round stage and shot with a gun with a 3" barrel or less. The local range required it to be shot from an outside the belt holster. In this match the revolvers had the advantage. any stoppage put the shooter out of the average times.
But it was a fun match. DR

I shoot IDPA, mostly in Puyallup. When you register, your gun puts you in a "class". Stock service pistol, enhanced service pistol, revolver, backup guns, and unlimited stuff. You create a profile in PractiScore and everyone shoots in groups of all gun types. PractiScore sorts it all out and you can see your scores after the match.

Of the 50 or 60 shooters, only 1 or 2 in each class really have a chance of winning. You'll notice them, they have cover garments with sponsor patches. Everybody else is shooting against themselves. PractiScore tracks your progress over time.

I wouldn't stress it. Just go to the closest match to you. Almost every match I have gone to has a wide spectrum on skill. From brand new to grand masters. It's a blast and it's only competitive if you make it that way. Both IDPA and USPSA. IDPA is more edc related/shooting from cover/etc. you can't draw from appendix unless the rules have changed. Either way they are a lot of fun.

Funny this should come up. They just started doing this activity at entry level at the Everett (WA) Sportsmen where I'm a member. Thursday evenings, 4:00 to 8:00PM, I think it costs $5 to enter.

I shoot the monthly IDPA match at Tricounty Gun Club in Sherwood. It's the first Saturday of the month. New competitors are always welcome.
