Hmmm, not used to this posting. Anyway, is the road clear now? I have a bad hip and can only walk very short distances.

We went up a few days ago in a Honda, first time, and again yesterday. There are a couple of pistol pits adjacent to the road if one bears to the left at the first junction (near 44°59'36.9"N 123°29'40.9"W). The roads get fairly muddy and steep. Bearing to the right, the main Gooseneck road is blocked by trees before any safe location to shoot. The two pits were occupied both trips, so we drove on exploring. There were rifle shots from somewhere that only a truck could reach.
I was stunned at the amount of trash, along with spent casings, skeet, etc. We got a bunch of empty 12-ga shells & bottles.

So, yes, you could drive right up to a place to shoot short-range, but you may have to share.

That is frustrating. There wasn't any trash when I went up and cleared the road.

The Gooseneck road (right at the three forks) was clean, as far as we could go. Thanks for all the clean-up. When we went on the left roads we scouted picnic/camp spots for star watching. Sadly, at a couple locations, there was fresh trash from shotgun shooters - shells, clay skeet, water bottles, etc. These spots were not pistol or rifle safe. A great difference from Mill Creek, the parallel road east. Mill Creek is Weyerhaeuser, no overnight or shooting though.

We used to go above Falls City years back, but the last couple of trips the logging roads were closed and / or posted. We want to find somewhere to camp, see the stars and plink. It looks like Gooseneck is the closest BLM to Salem. There are some BLM primitive campsites more north, but in the trees with no shooting. We haven't bothered looking in the east hills since the fires.

Really nice work clearing the roads, though. Thanks a bunch.

as far as I know there is NO CAMPING on Gooseneck rd. according to the posting @ the kiosk when you 1st come in to the area. That is if it hasn't been destroyed. Check w/BLM in Salem before setting up camp.

That's really sad to hear about Gooseneck area. Years ago (about 35 years) my brother and I would go up there to camp and do some shooting. No one else was around. It was nice a peaceful. People (so called humans) are a bunch of pigs. Sorry pigs. Can't go anywhere anymore without some or many people screwing it up for others. Really yanks my chain! I'll keep looking for a place.

Also, use to head up toward Black Rock, or just above Falls City and had no problems. Haven't been to Black Rock in ages. Was up above Falls City about 15 years ago and no one was around. Shooting places right and left. So, according to what someone said above, no one can get above Falls City now? Gate closed? I know of an old logging road (at least it used to be there) just out of Dallas. I'll have to see if it's still there and maintained so I can drive it. Back in the day I'd take it and be able to drive (logging roads) all the way to the coast. No lie. Those were the good old days when I could head out in to the Coastal Range and never see anyone else. *sigh*

The side roads above Falls City were all closed and posted on our last trip a few years ago. The main roads were open, but the side spurs were all posted and gated. Yes, it did go to the coast, and rambled all through the hills back in the one area code Oregon days. There was another access just before the Casino. Other areas we used to free-camp at around Mount Hood, Detroit, and La Pine have locked down also. Just too many people now. Same percent of jerks, though.

Thanks to those that have worked to open and clean up this and other areas.

I've beet to Gooseneck road several times in the last 6 months. I've noticed two things. 1) lots of trash that I end up picking up when I leave. You guys know who you are so pick up your f ing mess, sh it heads. 2) The signs stating that BLM workers are working and "this area closed to target shooting". I've not seen any cars or workers. These signs have been up for months and don't seem to move. Is this another way to close off public lands to shooters? I mean close them off bit by bit. Sometimes it's so slow you don't notice it until it's too late.

I've seen nearby land owners posting public property over the yrs. it's illegal to do that but only public property managers can investigate such matters. I've seen posting's up there( Gooseneck rd.) that didn't make sense? no roads or private property for mile's. Who knows who is doing what. Maybe B.L.M from Salem ( district managers) can look into it.

They've posted a new sign, most of the roads are open, my favorite shooting area is still blocked by fallen trees from the ice storm.

Needs a good chain saw and someone who is familiar with using one (12-16" trees fallen over the road). Unfortunately, I am no longer young/healthy enough to do this anymore.

No. Still downed trees up there. Only one spot that is past 50yrds and it's blocked off. It you don't mind walking half a mile you can make it
If anybody knows that area it's UnionMillsNW, what about the spot that's just past the kiosk (if that's still there) on the left side of the road, there's a berm that is 50yd's.

BLM officers are being really sticky about these rules. Closing all of the timber lands down is going to happen in our lifetime, no doubt in my mind. We can only represent ourselves in the best light possible. Clean-up, follow the rules and utilize OUR timber lands as long as you can. Use common sense and appease our masters.

Kiosk is there with a fresh sign on safe shooting rules. Taking the left split that first berm you'll see (I think the 50yd you're referencing) has an "unsafe shooting area" sign. The only safe 50yd+ area is straight when the road branches into a 3 way split. But it's still blocked about 1.5 miles down.

WOW, maybe time join Albany or four corners gun club

Thank you for the information. I think I drove on every road near Goose Neck Road today. I went as far as I could and was either blocked by downed trees or simply ran out of road. I did find a couple of spots that are suitable for pistol shooting but not rifle. I did go straight at the 3way split (i.e., the middle lane). I was able to get pretty close to the trees that were blocking the road but I ran into a bubblegum shooting on the road down to the spot were the trees are down. He did say they it is blocked further down. Since he was shooting, I said thanks and left. Being I was ready to shoot, I decided to go to SalmonBerry road. I did notice quite a few "Unsafe Shooting" signs up where it is obvious others have been shooting and it is clearly (my opinion) is not safe.

We are being pushed out, national land is the only option ( for me that's 65mi. one way) that is if you can find a safe back stop. Good luck to you
