I raise my whiskey glass and toast the last of a dying breed! RIP Gary

My first Rock concert was Lynyrd Skynyrd at Jackson Mississippi in 1974, I was 14 years old.
That was the first time I got stoned and I didn't even partake from the refers. I can remember feeling the pounding of the bass, drums and the screaming of the guitars. I also remember standing at the right front of the stage in front of the speaker bank in a trance like mode watching a speaker with a spinning cone, when a certain note was played it would starter spinning around.
Good Lawdy it was an experience that I'll always cherish and never forget.

Play it pretty for Atlanta boys.

Another memory involving Lynyrd Skynyrd was the plane crash that killed six, 3 were band members. The news came as a complete shock to us.
In the Fall of 77 I had reached my PDS at Ft. Carson Colorado, looking forward to checking out this mountainous country.
My unit was still in Germany on Reforger exercises for another 2 months so I spent a week at the barracks then was shipped northward to Ft. Logan, to spend 6 weeks preforming burial duty to fallen veterans.
While there we received the news of the crash, I felt like I was kicked in the head and couldn't fathom the reality of their loss.

After the unit had returned from Germany I was sharing a room with a guy from Jackson Mississippi, another Southerner cool.
We were getting to know each other, where we lived, interests and of course music. I asked if he heard about the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash and he got solemn and described in detail what his mother, a trauma specialist had told him about her experience.

She (Barbara) was scheduled to be off for two days and planned a trip to Biloxi Mississippi, before they packed their bags she got a call to report to work, STAT. Two of the crash victims had already arrived at the hospital where she worked, one didn't survive the trip.

She was mortified when she was told these victims were from the Lynyrd Skynyrd crash, she loved their music. After a bit she composed herself and during 48 hours straight, she did her job professionally to help the survivors as they steadily came in.

God bless all those trauma Dr's and nurses who worked many hours straight to save "The last of a dying Breed"!

I do not remember all of my conversations with Calvin about this subject as time, memory loss and age have taken so much of it from me.
It's still surreal every time I think about it.

RIP FREE BIRD, man 0 man we used to rock the F out to Skynyrd, back in my Marine Corps days, they were the ultimate redneck rock n rolla band, Freebird is still one of the greatest rock songs ever..RIP

"Free Bird" and "Stairway to Heaven" are/were the most over-played and over-rated songs in the history of planet Earth.

R.I.P. Gary Rossington

Sad news for sure.
He had a distinctive and iconic sound.

In regards to Skynyrd and Zeppelin....
( I love 'em both by the way )

Each band has two songs...
Freebird and songs that ain't Freebird....Stairway to Heaven and songs that aren't Stairway to Heaven.... :D

My sentiments exactly Andy. There are only a few bands from our era that have many great songs to their credit, those two come to mind. ;)

A buddy of mine had a copy of the original cover sleeve for Street Survivors that had the band covered in flames.
Yeah I still have that album somewhere, We saw them in jan of 77 in Hawaii, a whole bus load of us E-1/E-2/E-3`S went to the concert from K-Bay, our PLT commander even gave us half the day off to get all gussied up lololol, I think we still looked like boots for sure, God they rocked that place. I couldnt talk for 2 days afterwords I screamed so much. Good times, its all going away so fast.

I found this on line..I payed 1.75 for my ticket, because of us being in the Marines..I wonder what tickets cost today lololol. So many hotties were there, dang and me a poor PFC.
