We are 80 miles from the fire, and ash has been falling like snow all day... my son came in from school earlier and said... "just think you could very well be inhaling a squirrel right now"

First off, target shooters and hunters are born guilty...didn't you know that ? Might as well use them to shift the blame off of Salem.

I can see a possible silver lining in this. Lets say she totally phrarks this up and the entire fire makes it to the gorge, takes out Multnomah falls and the whole gorge scenic area. Who is in charge {cough, choke}? We could be seeing the birth of another Kitzhaber meltdown. All we need to do is get somebody decent who can run and capitalize on this.

From what I understand, it is well past the falls already - but they managed to save the lodge. I have not checked in the last couple of hours, but last I did, they were at level one alert in Troutdale. It will be interesting to see how far this comes down the river gorge.

They already have someone to blame, including a known suspect - kids throwing fireworks off a cliff?

Well it's great the lodge is still standing. Watch her try to take credit for saving a mostly stone structure. I am hoping that we didn't loose the trees at the immediate falls area. Wont be very interesting to see a water trickle coming out of scorched rock, not to mention Wahkeena, Horsetail, Latourell ETC.

It would be just another reason to finally move out of here.

I thought that it burned up the area around the lower falls.
My wife and I have family visiting from out of town in a couple weeks. We were going to take them to mult falls.

Yes there's a 15 year old from Vancouver that was named as the suspect. Sounds like they know he was the one that did it. I hope they charge him with everything they can and people sue the family.
Parents should teach their children better than that, and he should have to suffer the consequences.
The people affected can't take it back, neither can he.

A little perspective;

In 1902 the Yacolt burn consumed ~500,000 acres and killed over 60 people. It was started by boys trying to burn out a yellow jackets nest in Eagle Creek, Oregon.

she gave a standard cookie cutter answer. its one of our tools in our tool box , we will make decisions as information comes in..,, bla,,bla bla,. but you could see after she left the podium, she was visibly shaken by the question.

This is the interactive map I've been using. It doesn't change much, and doesn't show the fire progressing westward. News footage shows the fire near Multnomah Falls. The news also says the Eagle Creek and Indian Creek fires have merged. This map does not show that.

Is there a better, more up-to-date interactive map?

Sooo when is the state going to greenlight that damn supertanker Lars always talks about? Seems that it works and the FAA certified it. USFS and individual states drag bubblegum while that plane could be adding bigtime to the containment efforts.

In a way I almost hope these fires destroy places/things near and dear to a huge chunk of Portlanders to get their retarded arses to wake up and boot people like Kate Brown and the others who for decades have made bad policy the norm. When the state changed how forests were managed we started getting bad fires more regularly. They refuse to admit their way does not work so they continue the policies that endager people and property. If forests were managed better they could take a "let it burn" approach because the fires would not burn as hot or large because there would not be the fuel load on the forest floor we have today.

I do not wish deaths of anyone - save maybe the arsonists who started some of these blazes - but something has to change. These big fires will continue to happen otherwise.
