The Duke was my childhood hero, BTW. You don't have to be an American to understand tyranny - my dad was imprisoned for blowing up a British police station during the Irish War of Independence.

My dad probably shot at your GGfather. He used to do that quite a lot as a member of the East Cork flying battalion [that's flying as in leppin' about all over the place, not as in aviating, right?]

Obviously he missed.

But then, he was only seventeen at the time he blew up the police station. He still got fourteen years hard labour, but was released less than six months later when the Brits signed up to The Truce. All political prisoners were instantly set free.

Just in time for the Irish Civil War.....

Mine had been in Ireland since the end of the First World War. He left after the truce and went back to America and lived out his life as a L.A. County sheriff and lived well into his 90's. Didnt have a lot of friendly words to say about the Irish. Those tough old bastards didnt mince their words.

He would have been a dead man if he'd stayed after the truce, for sure. Dan Breen and his buddies were very keen to 'clean Ireland of the Tans' for all time, and he did a very good job of it. Around fifty or so never got to go back to Blighty.

The Irish didn't have a lot of friendly words to say about the Tans, either - if you get a chance, watch the movie about those times - 'The wind that shakes the barley'.

Yeah, I remember talking to him quite a bit. Mind you I'm maybe 10 at the time. "Hey Grandpa what did you think of the Irish"? In that heavy Cornwall accent he came back with " Theyr'e no better than a bunch of dogs. We'd shoot'em dead in the street" . Said he liked the duty a lot more than trench warfare. Better food.
