Ok.

Got the BCA upper..yeah yeah. Got a tromix barrel and upper project. Working on the last of the parts to accumulate.

However some checking awesome guy here pretty much gifts me the super coolest set of 458=socom dies for me to reload.

Now I don't reload. I pew pew. Lots of pewing. Reloading. Until now has been a dark art best left to mad old men sequestered in dark places.

Now i might be beginning this same journey.

What are some of the secrets of this arcane art. Any local loaders willing to help enable this lovely addiction?

All.sorts.of questions which presses. Powders. Cases..tips. primers! Loads! Not looking for super plus power reloads. But also can I load same tips as 45acp? And then the selection and special tips...

Maybe at the later stages I'll load up some specific round and do load development with the right tips and load eventually. I don't have a huge budget and it's a process...

Total novice. And willing to learn all about the big bore. Willing to be lectured and led through the wild process..

Sorry 500,50,450, trying to stay with learning about this flying ashtray chucking wonder. No hate towards y'all. Just wanted to try to stay specific until I branch out maybe...

Go ahead and let me know. Trying to get a full rabbit hole exploration. Any mad scientist people here?

Here's a tip.. a bullet/projectile is not called a tip.
Also, all that load are not of the geez. I started reloading and casting when I was 16.

You have picked a monster to learn on, so I would say the #1 secret is "Don't Screw It Up" cuz that one will remove didgets and eyeballs.

Now that I have that out of the way, YouTube is your friend when it comes to reloading so watch and learn. Also pickup a reloading book or two like from Hornady or Nosler. Do not buy anything until you are comfortable with a direction ( it's the whole buy once thing). Google 458 SoCom load data and start filtering through what other folks are loading and see what is popular. A quick scroll through ammoseek shows that 300-350gr boolotts are pretty popular. Start at the bottom of the suggested powder load and meticulously run 5 or 6 then shoot them one at a time just to get a feel for what you are doing and confirm you get bolt hold back.

I would start out with any single stage press and equip from there. IMO a progressive does leave room for some error which you need to take out of the equation with the 458.

My name is arrowshooter and I don't think I am a geez.

Ask Mr. Wizard

Exactly why I'm here..

This isn't the easiest round and is a special case for loading.

And what if I want to run lighter 185 grains or 200...

What about crimping and all that. Totally have seen a bunch of these videos and I'm.left with more questions. Hence why the seeking specialist advice.

I'm learning to embrace my inner red foreman. Seriously. I'm turning into the fudd! Where's my pipe and hairline went to!

Why is it these new fangled calibers isn't like some black powder poured in and a led ball squished on top. Making this all so complicated with the powders, all the shiny marketing...

I'm just in this in case some heard of bears is on the attack. Never know I might go gold mining in Alaska one year. Zombie elephant? This is something I might want to fully understand....

A sage piece of reloading wisdom I was given at the beginning of my journey: Never have more than one type of powder on your reloading bench at a time. Once done with said powder make sure to put it away before bringing another powder out to include making sure you have emptied out any powder dispensers or scales.

This is why I'm asking...

And the powder nightmares... That has gotten me a few nights. The market sure has changed since I knew what was going on.

Go find the specialist...

Or I'll blow my eyebrows off and maybe more.

again another reason I've got a bca upper...if that goes splat I'm not going to cry overly hard.

and the game again changes when we are talking loading for semi auto. If this was a single shot or a bolt gun... I'd not have the same situation with this round that I need specific advice.

yeah yeah I'm also looking for a normal.box of the 458 factory ammo as well. Might as well see about that might be my best source for getting brass I'm going to deduce.

I'd suggest a couple hours on the Youtube machine watching videos on the basics of reloading, followed by some articles to help reinforce and fill some gaps of what you just watched. Purchase a reloading book or two.

After you have the basic terminology, equipment needs and evaluated the specific skills needed, and haven't lost all interest, then come back and start looking at the minutia of the chambering(s) you want to embark on loading.

Only then can someone be of real help. It requires some investment of your time first.

I take that as a compliment! I also resemble the comment. The room may be dark, but there's a lot of light on the bench.

It's a pretty simple process once you learn the steps. Go slow at first and be meticulous with your steps. Soon you'll come to understand the relationship between all components. The whys and wherefores'. After that you'll want to load for every caliber! And eventually you will wonder how people can buy ammo.

Done the hours of YouTube. I'm semi familiar with terms and things. But that's why I'm quickly realizing I need a specialist. Only so much you can learn from videos. Let alone their own warnings to ask someone.

The guy sends me the ask Google link... I do it. First video is about a bullet that's for a 45-70 and customer freakouts... Black butterfly is also another thing I was thinking about accessing as they have sample packs. Kinda what I'm trying to do is learn about the selection and total capability of this.

No kidding this is a bunch of dark magic and sorcery.

Way better to have this addiction than the zombies I see in the street...

First video is of course 458 socom panic!

And yeah that's another thing the art of these crimping and such...

Oh that's just no fair... You Mr Direct drive are pointing out exactly why I have so many questions.

It's like a star trek convention. Everyone is speaking English but you don't know what people are saying. What's a product and what's a process... What's a good...... And what's not as good for advice...

This round has gotten me more hair loss than any other single reason... I'm not even gonna try to get into reloading the 5 other calibers yet. Guess I'm gonna wrestle this dang pig until I finger it out.

Pig is winning still... Like 40-0 in the pigs favor...

You have been taken to water.
Now drink.

I find this tool very helpful for researching loads/options: https://www.hodgdonreloading.com/reloading-data-center

For 458 SOCOM specifically I would get a loaded case gauge from Tromix: https://tromix.com/product/cartridge-slotted-case-gauge/

For reloading mentorship, try and locate a class: https://www.jimjacobe.com/the-reloading-clinic.html or http://www.douglasridge.org/classes.html
Reloading class.... Now that's a new one for my radar. Thank you very much. The loading data site is also a nice one.

Tromix... I have to avoid. I'll spend every penny I have. I'll want everything. They got so much cool stuff... Really need more financing and savings before I go back. I just had to have the barrel and begin the tromix build. Seriously I spent as much on the tromix barrel as the bca upper cost...
