I don't know much about it but I always thought a 12.5" .308 sbr would be a handy gun for bear defense. Velocity loss of a 12.5" compared a 16" .308 is 9%. 1900ish ft lb of energy for 12.5".
 
Re small gun bear protection, I saw this video of a 10mm Glock 40 with b&T usw. Seems like a good wearable bear protection gun if using hard cast bullets. They do make a holster for these but carrying in a holster looks a bit cumbersome to my eye (have not tried it). Around the shoulder or in a pocket or small pack would work. My 9mm version fits in the inside pocket of a regular fleece jacket fwiw.
