The first AWB, didn't a lot of Senators and Reps lose their seats? Even then.. not one Republican had publicly suggested repealing the AWB anyhow.
The midterms that year were a bloodbath and many, rightly, attributed AWB94 as being a major factor. American Rifleman even featured a cover showing the Xed out Congress Critters who got the boot. Slick Willy also made reference to it, stating, quote: "They were mad about this whole weapons ban and the Brady Bill, and they probably took 15 of our House members out. That was their number, they said between 15 and 20, and I'd say, at least on the low side, they were right." — Bill Clinton

Naturally, there was no real attempt to repeal the law, but thankfully, it sunsetted in 2004. Senator John McCain, the GOP presidential candidate in 2008, was the only Republican Senator to publicly champion renewing the legislation, and he even cast a vote for said, though it failed. (The 2012 GOP presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, signed a state-level version into law in Massachusetts, stating at the time, quote, "These guns are not made for recreation or self-defense. They are instruments of destruction with the sole purpose of hunting down and killing people.")

The first AWB contained a requirement for a study of its effects and a 10-year sunset provision. The study concluded no meaningful effect on crime and Congress let the law sunset without renewal.

Very good point. And one thing I find annoying is the current POTUS claiming it worked, when the study conducted (along with some others) concluded it was worthless. Well, except for infringing upon law-abiding citizens, though so many of our elected officials clearly don't give a damn about that.

They absolutely give a damn... Violating our rights is ALL they care about.

None of them, at this point, are well meaning but uninformes normies... They have been and are now working towards civilian disarmament. Period.

The road to midterms is going to be tough... Ultimately there may not be a political solution

What happened in Uvalde, TX takes the gun debate to the ragged edge. Universal BG checks etc are designed to prevent criminals and others from acquiring guns; this group is identified because they did something, or something happened, like an involuntary stay somewhere. The so-called "Red Flag" laws are designed to identify those on a trajectory that may lead to them becoming dangerous to themselves, and others. This gets into the weeds for obvious reasons; just because someone says they don't like dogs doesn't make them an animal abuser, and so on.

The TX shooter, it seems, went from zero to sixty in one second: Evil incarnate. I don't believe him being 18, and making him wait until he became 21 to buy a gun would've made any difference; he'd just have more time to stew and plan.

So-called leaders, politicians, are expected to "do something" in response to any crisis, either from their constituents, or their media puppet-masters; saying "oh well", "thoughts and prayers" isn't going to cut it.

I don't know that there's any gubmint solution which will prevent the next Uvalde, that's not going to stop people asking "Senator, what are you going to do?".

Sadly a lot of people with an R next to their name are pretty worthless. Sadly its the same, they want to keep their job so they say what they think will keep their job. Unless voters get a belly full and change? Nothing will change. :(
Rule #1 in politics, get elected. Rule #2, get re-elected. That's their only job.

As more info has slowly come to light the guy was showing everyone he was a powder keg. The big news is still trying to ignore a lot of it but this scum was a problem for a LONG time. As so often happens he was all but ignored until this. Of course him waiting till he was a few years older would do nothing but, these laws are never meant to actually do any good. Sadly way too many gun owners support the "compromise" over and over again. So we keep losing.

Im assuming small legislation:
80% bans
Online purchase restrictions
Raising the purchase age to 21

Drastic legislation:
They'll reclassify modern sporting rifles and scary semi auto pistols into NFA items. They'll still be available but now with the super double secret probation type BGC.
Raising the age might be a problem. The 9th District Court of Appeal just said California's firearms purchase restriction on 18 year old was unconstitutional and threw it out. I have read that 2 or 3 other US District Courts of Appeal have rendered decisions saying the same thing.

Kind of a candidate for a red flag, wasn't he? So maybe they put a troubled youth on a list that puts an automatic hold on any 4473 till a very big sheriff's deputy reviews said kid's record and maybe even pays him a visit with a shrink.

Raising the age is just yet another hoax. When some scum is willing to do what this scum did, does any law maker with a brain really think a law will stop him?

Their gun laws are never intended to thwart crime; they are meant to prevent our ability to defend a nation against their tyranny.

Repeal Posse Comitatus. Reconstruction is over. We dont have to worry about the federal government putting down the KKK any more. Create a special MOS in the Army for school guards. Place a squad of armed soldiers patrolling each and every school in the land Israeli style.

That might stop the shootings so it's not likely to happen.

Honestly recounting tragic loss in boating accidents, that won't work? :(

Apropos of nothing at all, can 6" PVC pipe and end caps be made waterproof with carefully applied primer & solvent cement? Is Vaseline a suitable sub for Cosmoline? A friend wants to know.
If there comes a time to bury 'em then we may be past time to be usin' 'em.

Do we really want to repeal Posse Comitatus? Sounds like it might be a slippery slope…
When civilian law enforcement cares about 2 things its time to repeal Posse Comitatus.

1. Filling their ticket quota
2. Their retirement package.

I can't think of a single other nation that doesnt use its military to supplement law enforcement duties. Prior to 1878 we had no problem using the military when needed on US soil. Its a reconstruction law who's time has passed when civilian law enforcement absolutely fails to do its job.
