There are way too many anti gun bills floating around to keep track of all the numbers, but from what I gather, the antis have substituted the Senate versions of the AWB and storage mandate with versions that require the treatment of "assault rifles" the same as handguns (DOL registration) and the dropping of the storage requirement, but keeping the liability portion for a prohibited person acquiring your gun.

Could be a sign that they are receiving little support, and are trying to compromise, or could just be a ploy to make themselves seem "reasonable".

I think that even though the dem's have control of The House, The Senate and the executive branch, they don't have enough votes to pass the bills as they are. So they're watering down these unconstitutional bills in hopes that will pull in enough votes from their own party to get their "common sense gun safety measures" passed. Anything that infringes/impairs/restricts gun ownership is good start for them and a win in their books. I personally believe that their goal, at a minimum, is to get the term "assault weapon" into the RCW. Once that is done, it will be much easier for them to take us down the same restriction/ban/confiscation path as the communist states, i.e. PDRK, NY, HI, CT, MA, etc.

I have not yet read the substitution bills, but I am very worried about all the 2018 anti-gun bills, and have started some major purchasing just in case... The (original?) bills had some truly awful provisions in them.

Everyone that can write in should do so ASAP:

My letter to the committee:
As someone who purposefully chose to settle in Washington state due to the respect the state had for individual freedoms and civil liberties, I am very concerned with the slew of anti-gun senate bills introduced this year: 5444, 5463, 5992, 6049, and 6146.

These bills, simply put, seek to severely infringe on the right to bear arms conferred by both our Federal and State Constitutions, while serving nothing other than political talking points and party line politics. I am exhausted by politicians and media who overplay statistically rare events such as mass shootings, and present distorted "gun violence" numbers that include non-violent events such as suicides, all in an attempt to create fake outrage and gain votes by trampling our individual freedoms and right to self defense. I am tired of billionaires from New York feeding campaign coffers in Washington State, meddling in our politics on behalf of their misguided ideological crusade.

SB 5444 and 6049 are clear cut examples: they create the fictional and purely political vocabulary of an "assault weapon," used as a rhetorical tool to infringe upon our ability to purchase most common, modern firearms. If one looks at the counter of any Washington State gun store today, at least nine out of ten firearms for sale would be illegal under these bills. Attempting to ban firearms with extraordinarily common cosmetic features by labeling them "assault weapons" is, quite transparently, an attempt to prevent the citizens of Washington State from owning guns in any kind of meaningful way.

I also cannot fathom bills like SB 6146, which would replace Washington's well regarded pre-emption law with the ability for the smallest municipality to infringe on the rights of its residents or those merely passing through. The cumulative effect of these laws that are being proposed will be to turn hundreds of thousands of Washington gun owners into felons overnight; either because they do not know that their otherwise normal (but "unlicensed" or "unregistered") firearms are now illegal, or because they choose not to comply with a law that penalizes them and tramples their rights despite no other violent or criminal action on their part.

My family and I moved to Washington State from both California and from British Columbia, Canada; locales where identically restrictive legislation has been passed, where this legislation has done nothing to affect the ability of criminals and violent gang members to acquire weapons, and where the legislation was used to harass and jail otherwise law abiding citizens and to ensure that they have no chance to defend themselves from still-armed criminals. It disheartens me immensely to see party politics sending Washington State to follow in the footsteps of the places we consciously chose to move away from. I worry that legislation like this and ill-meaning politicians who care more for campaign donations and talking points than the rights of their citizens, will one day push me away from Washington State as well, despite the roots that my family has set down here. Guns are not just the tool of the "redneck," but of the small statured woman defending herself against the larger man, of the family member defending themselves against the gang member, and yes, ultimately as well for the citizen defending themselves against the overreach of the government. The ability to own and use arms is a basic and natural right, that the oath you swore to uphold, shall not be infringed, incrementally or otherwise. If you feel that there is a problem with crime -- even though it has been on a downward trend for decades -- then target the criminals. Improve enforcement of existing laws, many of which are ignored. Do not target me or my fellow citizens.

I fear very much that Washington will eventually, perhaps a decade from now, become like California: a state imploding under the weight of its taxes and cost of living, while trying to stamp out the last remaining constitutional rights of its citizens. A state that has more people trying to leave than trying to enter. I fear that in trying to restrict our individual liberty, and our natural right to self defense, Washington State will be regarded as a state that considers its population to be subjects instead of citizens.

You must oppose Senate Bills 5444, 5463, 5992, 6049, and 6146.

This is my letter, gruff as it may seem these are my thoughts.

I've lived and worked in Washington since 1986, I chose to settle in a rural area in Grays Harbor. During that time I have enjoyed the great outdoors to include fishing, hunting, recreational shooting and self defence. I have also taught my children how to fish, hunt and shoot at a very young age.

They know all the rules of safety and practice them religiously, always. I took the time to be a responsible parent, I did not rely on public schooling or the state to do my job. I am a responsible adult and know my rights, state & federal.

What politically is wanted in Washington has already been forced onto the people of California and on the East coast. Last I have surmised is that California starts with a C, not a W.

These anti-gun bills (5444, 5463, 5992, 6049, and 6146) impair the rights of law abiding gun owners and over night will turn them into felons along with more regulatory rules that will not help stop gun violence.

The law abiding gun owners of Washington are not the problem and will not stand to be persecuted by unjust and unconstitutional laws. The British found this out 242 years ago, care for a reenactment? I thought not.

Do not bring this anti-gun agenda to Washington, paid for by out of state billionaires.

You have been lobbied by them under these names, Everytown for Gun Safety, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, The Brady Campaign, Americans for Responsible Solutions, Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence & Coalition to Stop Gun Violence.

The statistics they use for talking points are misleading and untrue for instance the total number of gun violence related deaths include suicides. Not violent at all but they are used to mislead all the politicians they lobby. Do your own research for the truth about their ultimate agenda, to disarm Americans for a total socialist controlled nation.

I do not condone the actions of any person, organization or politician whom seeks to impair my rights.

Please be the responsible elected official who will adhere to the oath of office you were sworn to uphold.

Regards, Caveman Jim

You should take out all that part asking about a re-enactment of the American Revolution. All that does is attract the wrong kind of attention to you and your family.

For the last two letters in general, I would lighten up on the California speak and saying you are going to leave the state because 1: They want you to leave and 2: They want to be like California.

I wrote my district Reps and told them I own property and pay taxes, and I disagree with the bills. Do that for every bill as a matter of record, the reason does not really matter, I pay taxes and I disagree.

Also, told them last thing I will do in Washington if able is vote against them if they don't stop the legislation from passing, because I can change my residence at at any time, so it doesn't matter where I pay my taxes. My house/property will sell in one day. Oddly enough, the district is covered by "Republicans" but I don't care, I will still vote against them if they are up this year.

Thanks for the insight, as I said it is a work .

Perhaps a better tack re Californication is to point out that if we WANTED to live there we would MOVE there... and to just casually drop that "My household contributes $X in tax revenues to the state budget, which we can easily reallocate to another state simply by moving there. Now remember that generally one hardcopy letter is usually considered to speak for several dozen constituents, and think about the implications to the State Treasury are..."

@Elf Wrong choice of words, they think Californication is a GOOD thing. Because TRUMP

I agree, the anti-gun legislators would rather emulate California. Maybe I am overly cynical from dealing with Federal politics, but my feeling was that they would not be convinced to adjust their position no matter what I said. I sort of assume they just have some staffer tallying up the "gun nut" letter count for them.

I was happy that all three of the representatives from my current district, and one member of the committee, responded favorably however. But from the pictures that Dave Workman posted in the other thread, it is looking like it will be quite a fight this year. It doesn't give me a good feeling; the best scenario would be if it died quietly in committee like last year.
